You'll get a much better understanding of the processes that run on your system with this tool, but you won't get any help in using it. Orange ProcessTrace 2006 features a confusing collection of screens, commands, and functions. There isn't a manual, and links to the publisher's Web site and program forums were dead during testing. That's too bad for novice users or those unwilling to study this app, as the program has some useful features.
The main screen features a Process List that's much more detailed than Task Manager's. The text is small, but the screen packs in a lot of information. Each running process includes its name, process ID, and file path. That data is complemented by two bar graphs for each process that display the process' current CPU and RAM usage. A pull-down menu makes it easy to sort the list by each header. As helpful is a histogram displaying the CPU usage of select processes. You simply drag a process to the chart to start the histogram and click a check box to compare any two processes.
Orange ProcessTrace 2006 also features helpful and easily set tools to blacklist or prioritize select processes. A process log is available, but doesn't allow saving data to a text file or spreadsheet. We liked this program, but it's not for novice users. With the inaccessible Web site, it also doesn't look like interested users can purchase it after the 14-day trial expires.
