If you're not already a pro at using the command line, OnyX is a solid choice for conducting routine maintenance and tweaking the interface on your Mac. This free utility shares much of the functionality of applications like Cocktail (which its help files suspiciously resemble), and it can help you with everything from checking S.M.A.R.T. status on your disks to configuring the Dock, Finder, and Dashboard and Expos to your liking. OnyX can even help you run Unix utilities and change your desktop to an animated background. As with all OS-tinkering applications of this kind, most features work most of the time, but your mileage may vary when it comes to effectiveness and stability--so buyer beware (especially given that OnyX doesn't cost anything).

"I love it and the price is right!"

Pros
It does what Macs Disk Utility does and more. User friendly.
Cons
It offers things I don't know anything about and would be afraid using could fubar my MAC, such as; Unix Utility, needs more info and explanation, for the geek light set.

I've never had any trouble with it, and have used it ever since I lost my Internet Cleanup program by getting sucked into "A new version is available; update?" I'd already paid for it once, and wasn't going to buy it again. So I started using OnyX (and Maintenance as well). Haven't been disappointed yet.

The software must do as advertised since I don't have any problems with it and I put it through all it's paces. Used the software for many years from tiger through snow leopard and it never caused any problems.

Needs the preferences of the 10.5x version.

Could not install on my mac. It told me that i needed OS 10. 5! The title clearly says OnyX (TIGER!!!!!) 1.8.5!

Over all OnyX sounds like a great program, too bad i couldn't install.
