If you're not already a pro at using the command line, OnyX is a solid choice for conducting routine maintenance and tweaking the interface on your Mac. This free utility shares much of the functionality of applications like Cocktail (which its help files suspiciously resemble), and it can help you with everything from checking SMART status on your disks to configuring the Dock, Finder, and Dashboard and Expose to your liking.
OnyX can even help you run Unix utilities, change your desktop to an animated background, and unlock hidden functions in apps like Safari and iTunes. As with all OS-tinkering applications of this kind, most features work most of the time, but your mileage may vary when it comes to effectiveness and stability -- so buyer beware (especially given that OnyX doesn't cost anything). This version will only work with Lion, so check out earlier versions if you're using an older version of Mac OS X.

OnyX is a multifunction utility for Mac OS X. It allows you to verify the Startup Disk and the structure of its System files, to run misc tasks of system maintenance, to configure the hidden parameters of the Finder, Dock, Spotlight, and of some of Apple's own applications, to delete caches, to remove a certain number of files and folders that may become cumbersome and more.

"A powerful cleanup maintenance utility."

Pros
Powerful program that cleans the caches and log files on your computer.
Reasonably easy to use.
Its Free but it behaves very much like a pro / paid for App.Cons
It can take a VERY long time to run (45mins) if you include the "Repair Permissions" Option.
Summary
A free utility that takes maintenance beyond "Disk Utilites" and its free.
Run Onyx once a month and be patient -

Lots of options to take care of system maintenance and cleaning out the "cobwebs".
Cons
You need to know what you are doing with some of the options or you could damage your system. This is not really a "con", just a warning to understand what you are doing.

Great piece of software that I install on each of my machines and all the machines that I maintain.
