"Thankful- it worked great"
Version: Ollie's iPod Extractor 1.0
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
My hard drive had to be replaced, my backed up external drive failed, and this product let me copy all of my ipod music back to my new hard drive beautifully. I am thankful that I can contiue to build on my electronic music library instead of having to rebuild it. I will have to reconstruct play lists but that is such a minor problem compared to everything else. Thank you, this was the only bit of good news/data recovery I have had since my massive data loss. -
"Works well"

Did exactly what I needed it to do. My PowerBook was stolen and when I got a replacement I had to find a way to import over 4000 songs from my iPod to iTunes. It took a while, but Broken Helix did the trick. -
"Worked great for me"

This thing is clean and quick. I tried a few others and they were either too hard to use or too slow or both.
Nice job. -
"excellent"

I agree that the one blemish for this app is the lack of a progress indicator. You have to figure out that when the green arrow turns bright green, it's done. It doesn't even say "I'm done!". :-) But it's free and it does the job, so thanks! -
"FABULOUS!"

There is no status indicator, so that is the only wierd thing. Otherwise this is a perfect little app that does the job flawlessly. -
"great app"

This is a great, clean, effective application. Does just what it says it does. I moved 3 gb of music over to my new flat panel iMac and everything, sans the playlists, came over perfectly. Thank you! It might be worthwhile to mention in the documentation itself how to get the iPod into firewire disk mode (that was one of those things that I *knew* but forgot how to do -- checking the comments below reminded me) but this is not even a quibble -- only a suggestion. -
"It worked great!"

Just to thank you for this small and powerful application. I had to do a clean installation of my system and didn't want to copy all of my CDs again (it's 12 GB of music!). I downloaded Ollie's extractor, followed the instructions delivered with the file, and in less than 40 minutes everything was all right. Mi iTunes library was left exactly as before. Of course, I lost my playlists on iTunes, but I could restore them very easy looking in the iPod and using the smart play lists functions from iTunes.
The program is extremely easy to use, it does what it is supposed to do and it's free. Thanks again! -
"Didn't Work"
Version: Ollie's iPod Extractor 3.0
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Could not get Itunes/IPOD to allow "Firewall Disk" option since it only seemed to allow "Disk" with options only to work with apple preloaded (60's music and such ilk) playlists. Don't know if it was the version of Itunes or IPOD I was using but I followed the instructions on Ollies download to the T and simply could not do it. If anyone else has run into the problem where the options on the IPOD in ITunes do not line up with what the recommeded website (Iso something) says one should see please feel free to advise.

"Good for reverting to iPod backup of iTunes library"
Version: Ollie's iPod Extractor 2.1
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The extractor worked fine. Granted, my previous iTunes library was completely empty because the previous HD I'd used is currently inaccessible, so that made things easy.
Start the extractor program, specify the iPod, specify the save location anywhere inside your user folder (Desktop works fine), then leave it alone while it does its thing (Ollie: You may want to make this more obvious to the user that it's busy, though - say, a spinning wheel or something below the button). When done, open up iTunes for the first time (or if it isn't the first, make it think it is by trashing the com.apple.iTunes.plist prefs (inside ~/Library/Preferences)), make sure you say "No" to the whole sync-to-iPod thing for now unless you've already worked that out, then let it sniff out all that extracted music on your desktop for you (check off both the "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" in the prefs, and it should rearrange them appropriately).
The only things not brought over from my old HD via the iPod were my playlists and my ratings (since I don't mess with play counts and equalizers, your mileage will vary on those items). No biggy for me, I'm just glad to have my music files back with name, artist, album and genre preserved.
The Importer didn't work for me, btw. Something about an "open[1034] No such file: /Users/aetnaria/Desktop/Music/*.*" error. Running OS X 10.3.2
