Publisher's description of Newsgroup Image Collector
Newsgroup Image Collector (NIC) is the perfect tool for collecting images from Usenet newsgroups. NIC can search one or more newsgroups for images by scanning each posted message. When a message contains image content, the image is downloaded to your computer. You control which newsgroups to search and you can filter out unwanted images by using advanced filter settings. Using NIC is simple. First you will create a new collection by entering the address of a (NNTP) news server. Next you select from a searchable list the groups you wish to scan. Optional advanced features let you filter your image search by using a variety of different methods. You can filter message subjects by keywords to allow or ignore certain images. You can filter images by width, height, file size, and file extension to skip thumbnail images or large space wasting images. Version 2.1 includes cumulative bug fixes.

- Version reviewed: Newsgroup Image Collector 2.1
There are a lot of media aggregators available, but if you're interested only in grabbing images, this utility provides the focus you seek.
As its name says, Newsgroup Image Collector looks for images only, so you don't have to spend time configuring the app to ignore video or audio files. This utility has a clean, functional interface uncluttered by flashy graphics except for a few icon buttons along the top of its three-paned window. Similar to typical e-mail-client designs, the vertical pane on the left features a directory tree, the top-right pane displays thumbnails of downloaded images, and the lower pane displays the search processes on the fly.
Configuring the program is very simple, thanks to its wizardlike setup function that runs on first use, which let us quickly pull groups from our ISP's server, find and filter groups to select and remove, and grab photos. Newsgroup Image Collector performed all its chores quickly. It downloaded the entire list of groups from our ISP's server, although your experience may depend on your connection type. The utility grabbed a lot of images in a relatively short period of time. Clicking downloads opens images in a new window. This meant we soon had multiple open windows. Screen clutter is one of our pet peeves, but the utility performs so well that we overlooked the issue.
Similar tools are free, but Newsgroup Image Collector works very well, is easy to master, comes with a 15-day trial, and the price is reasonable. We recommend it for any level user.
