"Bad, worse, worst"
Version: News Rover 18.0
Pros
The idea of the program is fine, the payout of the program is okay. In fact I want just a program as NewsReader, but then a program that I really can use.
Cons
Well, where do I have to start?
- Problems if you try to load the subject-lines of a large newsgroup: after hours and hours it looks like it is still busy.
- Messages sometimes disappear when you try to download them. After going to another newgroup and go back, the message is back. That has to say: it's only unreadable ********.
- If you try to delete a list of subject-lines, sometimes only the even (or odd?) lines are deleted. If you delete line-by-line, sometimes suddenly the cursor goes UP instead of down. So if you are a bit too fast, you delete the one you don't want to delete at all.
- If you want to check a list of messages you want to download, sometimes it just stops checking half-way or so. You only can check the rest if you go to another newsgroup and go back.
- If you press on the checkbox when not all parts of a picture are read, it stops receiving the rest of the parts
So the conclusion of this newest version (18.1 rev.6): way to many problems, so unworkable!Summary
I use NewsReader already for a very long time, just because I couldn't find a newsreader with better possibilities. Okay, there were some problems some years ago already. And with every new version you hope that the problems are solved. Bad luck. Most errors are NOT solved and the only thing is: you get new problems. Like now: trying to read the new subject-lines for one newsgroup: .... after 6 hours I really had to go to bed :(
Some years ago I tried to tell them already what problems I found. Reply on all my problems: sorry, we can't reproduce your problem.
Today new problems again. I get the idea that they can't solve the problems at all. I will install my old version again and start to search for another newsreader-program. There are many, but as far as I saw them now, I didn't like them.
One star. Maybe even too much. -

Pros
I have used this program for years and loved it. Simple, fast, nice features, easy to use, sharp looking GUI and more.
Cons
Since the company decided to build a 64-bit version of the software the darn thing crashes every few minutes. Click on a message to download it-- crash. Highlight several messages to be downloaded at once-- crash. 18.1 Build 6, the most recent, is almost impossible to use. Unless some fixes become available -- and soon-- I am going to have to start snooping around for a replacement. I paid for my versions and the yearly subscription to use their search servers and it seems I'm throwing my money away.
Summary
Latest version not ready for prime time and should still be in beta (the 64-bit version anyway). Otherwise (and that's a big otherwise)
News Rover has been rock solid for years and I have been very happy with it up until now. -
