Most newsreaders can execute a few tasks decently. News Rover does everything and does it well. The built-in search feature finds text, music, pictures, and movies. News Rover easily handles encoded binaries and even decompresses RAR archives. The interface, though not the most stylish ever, makes the program very easy to use. The privacy option, which costs an additional $9.90, lets you password-protect newsgroups of your choice and hide your filing folders from other users. It even will encrypt the names of pictures, handy for adult content on a shared computer. In a competitive niche filled with free newsreaders, users who don't mind paying for such software might find News Rover completely satisfies their newsgroup needs.Publisher's description
From S&H Computer Systems :News Rover is a Usenet newsreader that features a built-in search service for finding files in any Usenet newsgroup. Just enter keywords and News Rover will find matching files in any newsgroup. News Rover is the ideal tool for downloading MP3 music files, JPEG pictures, or full-length movies. News Rover includes a built-in RAR/PAR processor for handing RAR file posts. News Rover also has a JPEG picture gallery, and password protection and file encryption for privacy.
Version 11 adds a new screen to display a comprehensive view of the messages queued to be downloaded and currently being downloaded. Using this screen you can boost the download priority of a queued entry or give it a low priority.

"I'd give it minus 5 if I could"
Pros: Under XP the computer is almost unusable when News Rover is doing anything. When asked to download the headers from a large group the download stops every minute or so to organise and sort the list it currently has then appears to start from the beginning again. As a result it takes forever. If downloading something the search function just stops working. I could go on (and on and on) but I'll just finish by saying - it's garbage.
Cons: The uninstall feature worked :)

"Amazing, except some difficulty with yEnc"
Pros: This well-written program, once properly set up, downloads newsgroup posts and attachments extremely fast in the background. I find that the program is often waiting for me, rather than the other way around. This program makes downloading individual JPG and MPG files easy, and puts them in their own folder (usually somewhere in C:\Program Files\Newsrover\Projects\).
Cons: The program doesn't explain why it keeps starting and stopping. The "suspend for one hour" feature is extremely annoying. Why does clicking "Run" have no effect? I feel like the program is taunting me with the "sitting dog" and "running dog" icons that often don't seem to do anything. Why does searching for yEnc files (via setting in AutoInterest Group configuration) not turn any up, even when I know they are there from looking at the same newsgroup in OE? The program supposedly has support for yEnc, but I have yet to figure out how to download and decode a multipart video encoded using yEnc. For example, let's say I'm in Micro$loth's Outlook Express and I see Movie 1/15 yEnc, 2/15 yEnc, 3/15 yEnc, and so on, up to 15/15. When I go to Newsrover, I either can't find the movie, or find it but can't download and combine the parts. I wish the author of Newsrover would explain how to work with yEnc in more detail.

Version: News Rover 11
Cons: This is some of the most badly written software I've ever used. The interface is like something written in the 1980s: clunky and not at all intuitive. By far the worst aspect though is that it is a resource hog. As I write this my PC is all but unusable as NewsRover is downloading the message list from a news group with a large number of messages. The hard disk is being hammered, NewsRover is using 99% of CPU and everything else has ground to a virtual standstill. Perhaps their programmers forgot that people may want to continue using their computer while NewsRover is doing its stuff.
Give this heap of junk a wide birth.

Pros: It's ease of use plus the ability to setup all kinds of filters to allow you to zero in on only the items you are looking for make this the perfect news reader.
