One disadvantage of digital cameras is the visible grain--or noise--that may significantly degrade image quality. Neat Image is a filtering application that mutes the multicolored spots or textured appearance created by digital photos. It doesn't just use a bunch of blur and sharpen filters; instead, it studies the noise profile of your camera and uses a sophisticated algorithm to cancel or balance the noise of an image. You can browse the publisher's site to find noise profiles for many digital cameras and scanners.
The utility draws a clear distinction between noise and details in images, and we were thoroughly impressed with its results. Neat Image did an effective job at enhancing images without affecting quality, particularly in the deep shadows or solid-color areas of our photographs. The program is plenty fast if your PC has a good deal of RAM and processing power, but it may be a bit sluggish on older machines. Overall, Neat Image makes pictures squeaky-clean and seems like a fine addition to any digital photographer's arsenal.
Publisher's description
From ABSoft :Neat Image is a digital filter designed to reduce visible noise and grain in digital photographic images. It is a tool for owners of digital cameras, and flatbed and slide scanners; and is for use by both professional photographers, and digital-image processing enthusiasts. Neat Image reduces the high ISO noise associated with image sensors in digital cameras and scanners, the film grain visible in scanned slides and negatives, JPEG artifacts of over-compressed images, and color banding.
Depending on edition, Neat Image works as a standalone application and/or as a plug-in for Photoshop CS2/CS/7/6/5, Elements 4/3/2, Paint Shop Pro X/9/8/7, PhotoImpact XL/10/8, Photopaint, and Microsoft Digital Image Pro. Version 5.4 offers improved support for Pentax cameras, improved handling of large images in plug-in.
What's new in this version:
- Improved support for Pentax cameras
- Plug-in: improved behaviour in cases when plug-in host or OS cannot provide enough memory to the plug-in
- Plug-in now returns specific codes in case of errors (to facilitate use of the plug-in in Photoshop scripts)
- More accurate processing of command line parameters
- Several cosmetic corrections in GUI
- TIFF saved by RadCor could not be opened in Neat Image, fixed

Version: Neat Image 5.4
"Only for reducing Noise, and not very good even at that."
Pros: I like the fact that you can create (or download, as I did) noise profiles customized to each camera.
Cons: Reduces noise, but not that much. Other programs such as Helicon Filter (free) are much better at reducing noise, plus include other powerful yet easy to use image-enhancing tools that Neat Image doesn't have.
