RAID is an acronym for Redundant Array of Independent (or Inexpensive) Disks. RAID disk drives are used frequently on servers. RAID 5 provides data striping (spreading out blocks of each file across multiple disks) and stripe error correction information. This results in excellent performance and good fault tolerance. It uses 3 or more disk drives and provides the best balance of cost, performance, and data protection.

  • Can be used with any number of drives, from 3 to 30
  • Runs on OS X consumer and server, 10.2.1 and above
  • Software-based solution offers greater flexibility
  • Can be used on the Xserve or with your own multiple-drive configuration
