Recover a little Windows Registry space with this simple, yet effective, freeware compactor. NT Registry Optimizer's interface couldn't be easier to use; you either click OK to start the process or Cancel to stop it. During the optimization process, NTREGOPT displays the name of the hive being optimized and shows a bar that loosely reports the percentage left to complete.
Our testers found NTREGOPT fast without taking too much of the system's CPU resources. However, it ran best when all other programs were closed. It doesn't make any changes to Windows Registry entries, but is merely rebuilding the hives to eliminate dead space. After the program completes the optimization process, it displays the old and new sizes of the Registry. The percentage of space recovered varies greatly from system to system, but most test systems saved at least 5 percent. You must reboot your system to complete the process.
NTREGOPT fails with a safe error message if you attempt to optimize a second time without the reboot. The program is effective, efficient, and simple to run. Anyone comfortable editing the Windows Registry will find this Hive compactor a useful tool.

Version: NTREGOPT 1.1j
Pros: This program is very simple and easy to use. When I opened NTREGOPT it has a small window, that says welcome this program optimizes the registry files of your windows.
Next I click ok to start the process then it will optimize the registry. Now another window appears with the results of my computer. Registry optimization is complete, current registry size 28,872,704 bytes reduced to 28,041,216 bytes, which is a 3% reduction.
Cons: Does require computer to be restarted to activate the optimized registry.

Version: NTREGOPT 1.1j
Pros: I highly recommend this if you have a tendency to tweak with your system and/or like installing and uninstalling software.
Cons: I wouldn't really recommend this for novices, as one should always be careful with the registry, but instead Auslogics Registry Defrag.

Version: NTREGOPT 1.1j
"Didn't seem to make a difference"
Pros: It didn't seem to hurt anything, and was very easy to use.
Cons: To my knowledge, I've never optimized or compressed my registry before (thought I have run a registry cleaner a while back), and I have a lot of junk loaded on my computer. I did a defrag of my system just before I ran NTREGOPT. When I ran NTREGOPT it told me I saved 0.16% of the total registry space, and I have no way to tell of any other possible improvements I realized by running it. So bottom line is that as far as I can tell, it didn't really help my system's efficiency. P.S., I'm running Windows 2000.
