If you want to connect with topic-specific online communities and are willing to cede valuable real estate on your browser, this toolbar add-on may help.

MyConduit Community Toolbar adds a branded search field and tab to your Internet Explorer toolbar. Although the publisher's site says it works with Firefox, the add-on didn't install on that browser, even though it was our default in testing. Rather, the tool automatically opened IE after installation. The MyConduit additions to the toolbar take up more room than really is necessary, because nearly every browser and browser toolbar have built-in search engine fields nowadays. Simply adding a tab or MyConduit button to an existing toolbar would have been sufficient, in our estimation.

The search engine led us directly to Web pages featuring RSS links and toolbar add-ons specific to our searches. For instance, a baseball search took us to MyConduit's Community page for downloading baseball toolbars, which featured a headline crawl, RSS links, and still another search field.

Some users with intense interest in following particular hobbies may find real value in adding MyConduit to their IE toolbar, but most toolbars are already overcrowded in our opinion, and we see little benefit to crowding out the viewing pane with more and more redundant toolbars. However, the add-on is free, so it's worth test-driving.
