CNET Editors' review
This batch MP3 tag editor is, in the words of a user, "simply indispensable." If you're looking for a freeware ID3 tag editor with an auto-tagging feature sourced from FreeDB, Amazon, or discogs, you could do much, much worse than Mp3tag.
Besides checking and correcting song tags en masse, the lightweight application sports batch and single edits to effect such changes as case changing, auto-numbering, tag and track name flipping, and user-defined actions. There's playlist support and configuration exporting in six formats including CSV, HTML, and RTF. Support for more than two dozen languages offer the program up for international use, and a Favorite directory makes it easy to return to your music assuming you keep all your tracks in the same root folder.
The interface is a bit too simple, though. It won't be hard for anybody to navigate once you get used to the busy Toolbar and using mouse-over labels to identify button functions, but it certainly could be clarified with bigger buttons, or at least more easily identifiable icons. At worst, the user interface will slow you down, but in no way should it stop you from using this top-flight MP3 tag tweaker.
Publisher's Description
From Florian Heidenreich:
Mp3tag is a powerful and yet easy-to-use tool to edit tags of MP3, Ogg Vorbis, Musepack, Monkey's Audio, FLAC, and WavPack files. It can rename files based on the tag information, replace characters or words from tags and filenames, import/export tag information, and create playlists. The program supports online freedb database lookups for selected files, allowing you to automatically gather proper tag information for selected files or CDs.
What's new in this version: Version 2.47b has added helper menu for removing individual tag fields, removing all tag fields, and resetting the tag fields list at tag field selection lists.

"Batch tag or Edit in datasheet. Plus can add images"
Version: Mp3tag 2.47b
Pros
Where iTunes fails this succeeds. Can handle very large numbers of mp3s and include subdirectories on click. Individually tag files or a bulk tag (contiguous or non). Or update files as if you were editing an excel sheet. Don't forget to save!
Cons
Can also add album covers or images to files. The images can be tagged all which kinds of way and a label added. Only problem is this feature is slow. Everything else is lightening fast.
Summary
Edit individually - select a file and all of its attributes are populated in textfields on the right side of the screen.
Batch tag - Select a series of files and same thing is true with the option for you to overwrite existing field data but it also gives a visual display indicating that some of the fieds (example: the year) have different data in them.
Edit in datasheet - have a lot of different unrelated tracks? Then edit in the data sheet mode where you can change everything including the filename as if you were tabbing around on an excel sheet.
Double click the file and it will be played in the default player.
Add images - it might retrieve images from an online source but I haven't used this feature. Where adding text is extremely fast (instant) adding an image file even when it's only 30-60K takes a few seconds and is tough to swallow when you're batching. The cool thing about images is you can tag it as a front / back / inner cover for the disk. Maybe that means you can add multiple images to the same file but I'm not sure.
Lightweight - the file is only a couple of mb's and not resource intensive.
After editing my tracks in mp3tag updated my itunes library using a script file and viola - all my artists were grouped and tagged together.
Would really like to see better image speed and maybe even include being able to drag the image dimensions to stretch the image to the canvas size instead of adding a white space behind the file - or be able to set the color background behind the image to other than white...
Great job guys! Free tool at a for pay quality. -

"Gets the work done! Great for a free ID3 tag editor!"
Version: Mp3tag 2.47b
Pros
-Freeware
-Successfully edits ID3 tags in your MP3 files without trouble.
-Easy to use
-Really works, not like others...Cons
NOTHING! I'm really happy with it ^_^ But I do save my files constantly, just in case.
Summary
Let's you edit the most important details in an mp3 file (Filename, Artist, Album, Track #, Year, Publisher, etc...) Plus, so far it's THE ONLY 1 THAT GETS THE JOB DONE when it comes to editing the art/cover on any mp3 file.
I've tried 2 other products before (all of them free) and none of them worked for me, at least with the art. To me the album art it's 1 of the most important things, it has to be the correct image... At least, that's me...
Again, LOVE this product. Recommend it, absolutely recommend it... Awesome free product. -

"Dos what it say's it'll do and more"

Summary
I needed a program to tag my MP3's and started looking. I came across MP3Tag and now I'm hooked. You can't beat a FREE program that does so many things. I have yet to use all of the features but the ones I have used do a great job. Not to nock the program but I wish there were more entrys for the ID3 tags ie: ALBUM, this should have it's own year tag, there should be a place to put lyrics if you wish. Thse are the only two I can come up with but I'm sure more could be added.
I have used MP3 Tag for about 6 months and I have t say it is a great program and it's FREE. I've tried to use others but so far MP3 tag beats them all hands down. -
