No longer a fledgling upstart, Firefox 3 is full-featured, lightning fast, and an able foe for both the big-dog competitor Internet Explorer and competitors nipping at its heels. Firefox's killer add-ons remain strong, and the latest update makes version 3.5 about two times faster than version 3. However, competition is strong and it can no longer be said that Firefox is the fastest browser available.

Several notable improvements in the latest revamp keep Firefox abreast of current browsing tech. Along with Mozilla's new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine that renders Web applications faster on Firefox than ever before, there have also been improvements to the layout engine Gecko for faster page rendering. The new Private Browsing brings a feature to Firefox that competitors have had for a while: the capability to turn off cookie and history logs. Users also have more granular control over cookies, history, and bookmarks in version 3.5 via the redone Clear Recent History option under Tools. Geolocation courtesy of Google has been activated by default in Firefox, so that generic searches such as "city hall" will come closer to pegging the government offices nearest you.

Web developers should be excited about expanded support for HTML5 local storage, downloadable fonts, and native support for OGG-formatted embedded video. ICC profiles, SVG transforms, CSS media queries, native JSON support, and Web worker threads also get lots of love from v3.5. There's no doubt that Firefox 3.5 is a must-have, but it's an update that's more about keeping the browser current rather than blazing new trails.

January 12, 2010  |  By john d

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.5.6

Pros

Not used I.E. in awhile not sure how it compares to Firefox
Started using Firefox a year + ago liked it, I liked the idea of having extra plugins and addons available back then that list has grown still like it and it's the only one I use at present

Cons

Not sure where to start SO I WON'T , no major cons I can think of of hand

Summary

Don't like the automatic Google inclusion I don't Google much period and don't care to. Some companies get TO Big to fast and try and control things
(Like Micro Soft does).

"Great Only 1 problem in the 1 week I've used it"

January 05, 2010  |  By JethroGibbsTGT

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.5.6

Pros

Works MUCH smoother, safer & faster than my AT&T Yahoo browser

Cons

Comparatively speaking: none

Summary

Very little "thinking" (hesitation) compared to my AT&T Yahoo browser. In the week I've used it it has only froze once. That was when I went to Snopes.com and I could not get rid of the Netflix pop-up. After a few tries it froze the browser window entirely. I'm using Windows XP Pro

"No go for Windows 7 x64"

January 04, 2010  |  By azflyman

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.5.6

Pros

It was always my favorite browser for years with Windows from 95 (Mozilla) through Vista x64

Cons

It used to be stable with over 30 tabs open with my machine but now hangs with the little circle of death thing with less than 10 tabs open.

Summary

I thought Widdows 7 x64 would not be that much different than Vista x64 (both Ultimate) bit there seems to be a huge difference and I wil be using Opera now until the Firefox folks can get the bugs worked out. What a disappointment as some of the add on's i use in firefox are very useful.

"Very Disappointing"

January 02, 2010  |  By brtiller

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.5.6

Pros

The bookmark search feature still works

Cons

1. Does not always start up, sits in task manager as started but no UI
2. HTML links sometimes don't open or take a very long.
3. Javascript doesn't work most of time - yes it is fully enabled.
4. Performance is slow compared to IE 7 - a first!

Summary

I have been using FF for several years and have told others how reliable and useful it is. I always recommend it over IE. Now with the release of 3.5+ I'm beginning to eat my words. Someone added a bunch of crap to the 3.5+ release that really screwed up the performance and reliability of FF.

Pros

normally wonderful

Cons

Summary

CNET- I WILL NOT LOG IN again to answer a request from you about my downloads. Since you sent the request you know just who I am, so why waste my time?- even though the main YAHOO mail forced me to change my 5 year old password, and this part of YAHOO insists on the old password which mail won't accept. You're also moving some of my long-standing email to Spam again. I may just move these requests to Spam.
