Editors' review

Read CNET senior editor Rob Vamosi's extended review of Firefox 3.

No longer a fledgling upstart, Firefox 3 is full-featured, lightning fast, and an able Internet Explorer foe. Previous versions have seen Mozilla's approach to features such as tabbed browsing and extensions become extremely popular. Even though Firefox 3 lacks a killer feature, it offers significant improvements not to be missed.

Version 3 introduces a multitude of safety and usability features. The location bar drop-down menu now includes URLs from both your browsing history and your bookmarks. A new Add-Ons manager includes a built-in plug-in search engine, saving you the previous trip to the Mozilla Web site. Single-click the star icon on the right of the location bar to bookmark the current page, or double-click on it to simultaneously add and edit the bookmark entry. You can tag bookmarks, too. Other impressive new features include password confirmation before adding it to the saved passwords list, the ability to pause and resume downloads, and merged forward and backward history lists.

Firefox 3 now runs faster and, according to Mozilla, is less susceptible to hacks and other vulnerabilities. The browser now warns your system's antivirus program when you download a file, and anti-malware and anti-phishing utilities now throw up a warning page before allowing Firefox to load risky sites. The favicon reveals Web sites' ownership details and displays the security level of your connection to that site.

Developers will appreciate that Firefox 3's new graphics and text rendering code provide rendering improvements in CSS and SVG as well as improved display of fonts and complex scripts. Firefox 3--still open-source, as ever--is a browser that all users should consider making their default Web-surfing tool.

    "One of the top ones"

    July 09, 2014   |   By JSan97

    Version: Mozilla Firefox 30.0

    Pros

    Secure
    Abundance of possible addons
Low memory usage with many tabs compared to other browsers
    Monthly updates

    Cons

Depending on system, may be a tad slow

    Summary

Up at the top with Google Chrome and Chromium-based Opera, Firefox remains one of the go-to browsers for home users and offers many addons to enhance their experience.

"Not worth the trouble anymore removed it from my PC"

    June 26, 2014   |   By musicman4you

    Version: Mozilla Firefox 30.0

    Pros

    That it is open sourced

    Cons

To many to mention.Just read the other reviews they already said it.To be honest I wish I could go back to Firefox version 3.6 that I always used.Seems like it started going downhill after 3.6.

    Summary

I can't recommend this to anyone and don't trust Google Chrome on Privacy.I can't recommend the newer stripped down version of Opera anymore but I can tell you that I would and do recommend the Pale Moon browser that is open source just like Firefox with hundreds of features and will use Firefox Add-ons.Pale Moon in my opinion is the best Browser out there out of all of them. With all of these other Browsers going downhill I have been using Pale Moon for over a month and it is awesome. If you are fed up with the other Top browsers like me give Pale Moon a try and download it from there site with a google search.Be sure and download the right version for your computer. They have a 32 bit and 64 bit version plus a Linux version. They are making an Android version also. The other browsers could learn or should learn from Pale Moon.It is awesome.

    "Good bye, so long"

    June 24, 2014   |   By jetgraphics

    Version: Mozilla Firefox 30.0

    Pros

It was once the best browser. But no more.

    Cons

    Where do I begin?
    Facebook - slow - hang -
Play back of videos - locks up or no show
Play back of audio files - sometimes
Keeps eating memory and slows down even more

    Summary

I am forced to go to CHROME, for only it "plays nice."

    "Firefox is going downhill!"

    June 23, 2014   |   By charliejh

    Version: Mozilla Firefox 30.0

    Pros

I like the look of the new Firefox and it has nice extensions and themes.

    Cons

BUT: Every time that I hit enter or click the mouse it takes forever to load. No problem with Chrome or IE11. I have Comcast with 59 mbps download time. AMD A10 with 16 gigs of ram. I hate Chrome but I will have to revert to it.

"I have used Firefox for years and prefer it to IE."

    June 22, 2014   |   By HPJIII

    Version: Mozilla Firefox 30.0

    Pros

    Steady, reliable browser.

    Cons

However, some of the 'new' ways they are updating Firefox are unnecessary and a little bit puzzling.

    Summary

Probably the best browser you can get for free.

    "Pop-up blocker sucks!"

    June 20, 2014   |   By int_revisor

    Version: Mozilla Firefox 30.0

    Pros

Very nice looks! Works very good with trustful sites.

    Cons

Pop-up blocker is a joke. I bet it blocks about 2% of pop-ups! Also it likes to create thumbnails of every page you visit, ***!

    Summary

I want a full in-build pop-up blocker. Opera 12 had it. I'm now using Firefox because new Opera has no bookmarks manager. Also Chrome is a spy Browser. And IE 9 and up are not compatible with older software i have. ***, I can't get a decent Browser!

"Problems with picture galleries, too much like Chrome."

    June 20, 2014   |   By fwwackus

    Version: Mozilla Firefox 30.0

    Pros

Fast loading, ad blocker, works just fine.

    Cons

too much like chrome! picture galleries stop after three or four pictures and you have to start over. This happens again after two or three more new pictures.

    Summary

Still my preferred browser, but is losing ground as it tries to copy others.
