"Does All You Want It to Do and Then Some"

August 31, 2011  |  By Rick_Littlehales

 |  Version: MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition 6.5

Pros

User friendly (if you follow instructions and use the wizard) and fairly intuitive. Easy to use and it's FREE!

Cons

Some options only an IT expert would need.

Summary

This is a great product. I lost one entire pertition. An external HD would no longer be recognized and kept advising that I would have to reformat in order to use it. With this program, the recovery of 1.5TB of movies, personal pictures and very personal documents was recovered. It took 2-1/2 days, but it recovered every last bit that I specified and left behind the junk I didn't want. Very easy to specify what you do and don't want to recover.

"Seriously? To good to be true..."

August 30, 2011  |  By DaDreamWizard

 |  Version: MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition 6.5

Pros

It works! It recovers "EVERY" file that was 'shift-deleted'. And I have played' with free & commercial apps & none could recover the files as this. it takes 15 MB installed & has a light nice feel & does it's work as fast & faster than most.

Cons

A touch of donation request on start up & closing, but nothing time consuming. It's not a real con, they do deserve it if one has a bit extra cash.

Summary

It does it's job better then most that could cost the same and more. That it's free for us home users is a blessing compared to the other apps of this type from well known companies.

The fact that it feels and works so efficiently impressed me. When I first ran it I thought for sure it couldn't do what the others failed to do, yet it did.

Instead of repeating words, just go up to the "Pros" section.

If you need a file recovery for your tool kit & for regular/emergency usage, this is a good one. For a usb drive, a backup drive, the pc's drive, wherever, this is what I use now. It's replacing an app that wasn't free.

I also like the fact that it's job specific. It doesn't try to be everything, but it does do near everything for file recovery. The only thing it doesn't do is have an area for 'drive sector specific' data recovery. But I found when you need or try to recover from a specific point on the drive the data in it's entirety is just remnant pieces, over written & not worth the trouble. And finding the sectors, at least for me was a pain & troublesome with a no result yield. The features here should be more than enough, even those with more skills than myself.

You all have nothing to lose (except a ditto of space) and anything to gain by having it. Most of us are human, we make mistakes & this can take care of those mistakes, or another app could inadvertently delete a file, whatever. Every one of us should have a file recovery method in place. This app is for now a no brainer. Try it.

"Superb Software for Recovering Data off Crashed Drive"

August 27, 2011  |  By AstroNerdBoy

 |  Version: MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition 6.5

Pros

It found everything I wanted to recover and then some. Easy learning curve on software and recovery. Image recovery simplified by recoverable images being displayed in thumbnail view. 1GB free trial allows you to see exactly what can be recovered.

Cons

Computer novices may be overwhelmed by default "show all" files and folders, which often have temp names. Novices may be confused by multiple partitions being displayed. Right-click save defaults to a single file, not all that had been selected.

Summary

I had an old 300GB external HD go south on me and while the drive was being used to archive some old anime video files I already owned on DVD, I still wanted to have these files. I looked for good software and gave a pass to the software that had tons of its employees provide fake positive reviews and went for MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition instead.

Because my HD crashed, I was forced to do a long scan from the "damaged partition" option. That wasn't a problem other than the scan took a long time. Sadly, my first attempt failed because the HD just stopped working. My second attempted was successful and 10.5 hours later, MiniTool Power Data Recovery discovered three partitions with the same size. That was a little confusion to me, but I assumed that the one flagged as "99%" was the proper one and it was.

The software then generated a list, which is done in a directory-tree fashion, meaning it is as simple as using Windows Explorer to look for files to be recovered. The software defaults to displaying EVERYTHING it could find on the drive and I was amazed at what all it could see, including temp directories and files from when I had reorganized the files on the drive some couple of years back. There were old files it found from when I first owned the drive, though none of these were in a condition that were usable to me (though I'm sure that there is software that could piece this stuff back together).

I deselected the view for deleted and damaged files and only showed what I wanted. With a 1GB recovery, I first chose some 30 images files which I had archived elsewhere (so no loss if I couldn't recover them). By changing the view from "list" to "thumbnail," the images showed up in the view as they would in Windows Explorer. I restored the files and all worked perfectly. I then attempted to do the same from those temp and deleted folders and saw that many of those images either didn't display at all as thumbnails, or only partially displayed. So, for image recovery, images that get full thumbnails are going to be good to recover and those that don't won't be worth recovering.

For the movie files, AVI files also show preview images in thumbnail view so those files were going to be good. MKV and OGG files don't get such previews, so the only way to verify if they would be good was to just recover the lot of them and then test after the recovery. So, I chose a couple of them and an AVI file (just to be safe) at random and recovered them to get to the full 1GB. I was pleased to discover that all three video files I recovered worked perfectly and so I immediately purchased a licensed copy to have unlimited data recovery.

I had to do a second, full scan after the drive stopped again, but 10.5 hours later, I had my list of files and 275GB of video to recover. It took several hours to recover all of the files to a second HD, However, while I haven't tested 100% of the files, I can say that the 30 video files I selected at random worked beautifully.

I don't know how this software will work in every situation. In my own instance, the software worked exactly as advertised and as such, was well worth the price of a full license. For those not recovering video but just images or documents, the 1GB free trial is pretty sweet because you can recover a lot of data, certainly enough to know whether or not this software will work for your situation. As such, I highly recommend this software for those looking for a good data recovery software application.

Cons

"Easy to use does what it is designed to do"

August 20, 2011  |  By cawireman

 |  Version: MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition 6.5

Pros

User friendly, simple as click to check files to restore and selecting a location for the restore. Best free recovery software I found after using 5 others that were unable to recover a thing.

Cons

I have nothing negative to offer only thanks.

Summary

I got a disk read error and was not able to boot into windows. Searched the internet for a fix and everything I found did not help. Finally I went to Cnet and searched for recovery software. I tried several which could not recover anything before finding this. It was the only tool I found that could recover my files. User friendly and free! My thanks to the developer, I am making a donation.

"Recovers what Recuva and Pandora can't !"

August 14, 2011  |  By t00nz

 |  Version: MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition 6.5

Pros

This is very good software. Ran it against Pandora and Recuva, and this was able to not only recover more images, but also videos and mp3's. In short, very good software for being freeware.

Cons

Can't detect my point and shoot cameras. Still have to use a card reader with this software, like most other versions of recovery software.

Summary

This software is actually good enough that if I were a payware recovery software vendor, I'd be concerned.

"Does the job"

August 07, 2011  |  By CosmicRay72

 |  Version: MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition 6.5

Pros

Tiny
Simple
Intuitive
Free! No trial or crippled version.

Cons

None so far.

Summary

I recommend using this software to anyone needing to recover accidentally erased files. Success depends heavily on whether you wrote new data to the disk after deleting the files or not. If you did, there's a good chance that your deleted files got overwritten.

"Best disk recovery tool out there!"

June 27, 2011  |  By StyleAndEntertainment

 |  Version: MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition 6.5

Pros

It works and has a simple GUI. Small size and fast operation.

Cons

None at all

Summary

I've used it twice. Once to recover a huge deleted folder on a standard HD FAT XP file system and once to recover a CF Card from a Canon camera that had a hosed partition making it completely unreadable. Neither Easeus or Pandora could do the job this program did with ease.
