If you're in the market for a capable antivirus, firewall, and Internet security solution for Windows, would you consider one that consistently ranks at or near the top in tests against the big names in antivirus protection? A lightweight app that's frugal with system resources? One that offers timely, automatic updates, an effective firewall that integrates with Windows, and user-friendly operation that's mostly in the background? Suppose we added the fact that it's free and that you might even have it already, and if not, it's a few clicks away? Sounds great! What is it? Microsoft Security Essentials, that's what -- one of the best-kept secrets in Windows software. We tried Microsoft Security Essentials for 64-bit Windows.

Microsoft Security Essentials actually works well with many other programs, but the installer advises removing your existing antivirus software, if any. The program checked for (and found) updates even before the installer had finished. Security Essentials is designed to work mostly in the background, with minimal user input, though some of its components require configuration, including the Windows Firewall. The program's interface is plain but efficient in a way that, if it doesn't scream "Microsoft," certainly uses its outdoor voice. When activated and up-to-date, Security Essentials displays a green system tray icon, indicating our PC's Protected status. As with any antivirus tool, Security Essentials needs an initial scan to ensure that your PC is free from infection. We changed the scan settings from Quick to Full accordingly, and ran the scan, which happily turned up no threats. Subsequent scans are much quicker. The Windows Firewall isn't as effective as some freeware firewalls out there, but it's way better than nothing, and you can disable it individually if you prefer to use another program.

We've always thought that many people assume that they need a third-party antivirus program because there are so many of them, including lots of freeware. That would seem to explain why more people don't take advantage of Microsoft Security Essentials. It's the easiest choice, so it can't be convenience. Microsoft Security Essentials 64-bit isn't flashy on purpose. But it offers effective protection with minimal fuss, for free.

 |  Version: Microsoft Security Essentials (64-bit) 4.0

Pros

Good Protection
Little false positives
Very light

Cons

The icon in the toolbar should have more options(at least, updating and quick disabling should be there)

Summary

I came from AVG because the company restrict some countries(and mine,Iran)
I installed and found it very very good
No need to come back
They also have a malware analysis Centre which is THE BEST:

"Never a issue with it"

September 12, 2012  |  By jscott418

 |  Version: Microsoft Security Essentials (64-bit) 4.0

Pros

Low impact on resources, Free, not annoying

Cons

Probably not as good as a expensive paid suite, slow to do Full Scan

Summary

Been using MSE since its beta inception and find it effective enough for most users. Although it does miss some adware or spyware I have found most of the time its not a issue. Unless you really don't take common sense measures like not surfing porn sites,or clicking on links and pop ups and fearware. I think it works for the user who needs just a little security and peace of mind.

"Remember pop-ups?"

August 23, 2012  |  By elleinadhi

 |  Version: Microsoft Security Essentials (64-bit) 4.0

Pros

Doesn't slow down your computer
It is free

Cons

Everything else

Summary

Stay clear of this virus protection! I ran it for two months doing normal activity such as email, business, and Facebook. During that time I started noticing a popup or two when I would click on links. A few weeks ago they started popping up when my computer was just sitting there, and I couldn't click on any link without being directed to something far removed from what I wanted. I broke down and shelled out the money for a renewal on my previous virus protection and on the first scan it found 14 threats, including some Trojans. I had forgotten what it was like to have viruses take over my computer and have constant pop-ups. Now I remember why it's worth paying money for a yearly subscription to other virus protections!

"Home run virus protection that works."

July 07, 2012  |  By Casinoboi

 |  Version: Microsoft Security Essentials (64-bit) 4.0

Pros

Doesn't interfere with me & my computer, doesn't make my computer run slow, no maintenance (which I'm still getting use to) its FREE

Cons

None as of yet

Summary

I reformatted and usually change virus protection so I know what is good & what is bad. My computer came with Norton and I tried that for 15 days but it kept slowing my computer down so that's when I decided to change anti virus and wanted to try something new. Although IO was skeptical at first because Microsoft is a virus protection company but I have to say so far Billy Gates and his team have knocked this out of the park.

No longer slows down the computer, very simple, no maintenence required with it, FREE

Cons

I can not speak for its detection rate yet

Summary

I switched to the latest version of MSE from Avast, best move I have ever made. My computers became more responsive, and were overall faster. Its very nice how you can install the program, configure it, and forget about it!
