Editors' Review

MediaMonkey Standard offers plenty of ways to enjoy your favorite tunes, but its default layout isn't very easy on the eyes. Luckily, you can customize that and just about every other inch of this powerful music player. That, combined with the built-in streaming radio and other nifty features, make it one of the best free media players on the market.

The program makes you click through a ton of pop-up windows -- including several administration permission windows -- while it's installing. The program, itself, is worth the wait for most music fans, though. It has neat features like tabbed playlists and party mode that make it easy to play your music, however you want. In addition to collecting music already on your computer, MediaMonkey Standard will search for music on any connected drives. It supports most streaming radio, as well. The program has an active community of coders and tinkerers behind it that have made lots of custom skins and tweaks you can add to the player. That's handy because the program, itself, looks a little bland. There is a gold version that unlocks more goodies, a fact you'll know with any usage of the player because it will constantly remind you that you can get it by paying or by completing special deals.

Don't be bothered by the program's mediocre layout -- it's housing one of the best media players we've tried and you can easily change the looks to suit your preferences.

It is not very easy to use. If you want to test all its features then it necessary to read the help file.

August 30, 2013  |  By Rishant_Kr

 |  Version: MediaMonkey Standard 4.0.7.1511

Pros

Very good audio player in terms of functionality and usability. can do almost everything. Everything is on the screen, no need to open things in order. Just pick and check the section available to your screen.

Cons

Mediamonkey dont have too much problem but lagging makes this nice piece into a ****. Dev. should solve mentioned problem to make this player a all round champion.

Summary

Good software for making youself a DJ Jockey.

"Cnet/Download uploaded the GERMAN language, not English"

August 21, 2013  |  By SoftwareTestPilot

 |  Version: MediaMonkey Standard 4.0.7.1511

Pros

CNET sucks. These software developers pay to get listed, then Bait & Switch.

Cons

CNET/DOWNLOAD uploaded the German language for this software during the latest update. Go to MediaMonkey's own website to download the English. Sheeesh!

"Simply the best"

August 19, 2013  |  By neologic60

 |  Version: MediaMonkey Standard 4.0.7.1511

Pros

A doddle to use - play, convert, organise
All your music management in one programme
Looks good thanks to extensive skin library kept fresh for more than a decade
Sounds great, especially through amplified system - infinitely tweakable with EQ

Cons

If it could record audio from PC I would never use anything else, but there are other programs that do that well so not a major drawback.

Also had a slightly dodgy experience with importing music into the library many versions ago - tracks got lost, and it slowed the machine down (though that was before dual and quad-core CPUs). Haven't used it since so it may be better now, and in truth don't need it because of how I organise my music

Summary

If you have a large digital music collection that you have taken care to organise properly, do yourself a favour and get Media Monkey to keep it that way. I have grown my collection to more than 50,000 tracks over a decade, and MM is at the heart of it all. Server, portable devices, CDs....all are fed through this. Can't imagine using anything else.

"Nothing remarkable"

June 15, 2013  |  By BillsCatz

 |  Version: MediaMonkey Standard 4.0.7.1511

Pros

Seems to do as told.

Cons

Too much involved in getting it to do as desired.

Summary

Might be great for genuine online audiophiles, but there are faster simpler programs for working folks.

"Media Monkey delivers across the board."

June 13, 2013  |  By lawman33473

 |  Version: MediaMonkey Standard 4.0.7.1511

Pros

Easy as pie to use. I'm a Windows guy but not really into media until recently. I've used DoubleTwist in the past, but it's outdated and not recognizing most newer phones (at least the three I have). Media Monkey on the first connection recognized a new, but fairly obscure T-Mobile Samsung Exhibit phone. It allowed me to sync all my songs.

Cons

None observed.

Summary

I will be purchasing the Gold Edition which grants users automation of routine tasks freeing you up to connect and forget while auto syncing and conversions take place. If you're into supporting a smaller company that put out a clean, fast, quick learning curve product, please do so. We need more companies that deliver full features for a free try before you buy. There is no time limit for the limited feature product, but they deserve support for putting out such a polished product.

"So far it's OK"

June 05, 2013  |  By jimmy6p

 |  Version: MediaMonkey Standard 4.0.7.1511

Pros

This program looks like it will do just about anything you want it to

Cons

When I right-click on a song to 'play now' it adds the whole album to the pay list, not just the one I wanted to play. That part sucks.

Summary

This program is easy to use. It's fairly intuitive so it takes no time at all to find what you're wanting to do.

"Very Solid"

May 29, 2013  |  By ITAppliedIntelligently

 |  Version: MediaMonkey Standard 4.0.7.1511

Pros

* Works great for me on both Windows 7 and Windows 8
* Handles large audio libraries with ease
* Very feature-rich - for non-native features, there is a robust developer community which creates 'scripts'
* Allows streaming videos from PC to mobile devices (e.g. iPad)

Cons

* No Gracenote tagging (but pretty much all other tagging-services)

Summary

I did a *lot* of research, and went with MediaMonkey Gold Lifetime. I still look to see what other vendors have (WinAmp, JRiver, Foobar, etc.), but feel that MediaMonkey is "top monkey" right now.

For playback, I think Foobar gets the edge if you have FLAC and high-end gear (DAC, amp, speakers/headphones), but I'm just using my integrated sound-chip right now, so that is N/A for me. I've heard of people using MediaMonkey for library maintenance, and Foobar for playback (audiophiles), which I may do some day.

"Not bad, for the n00bs out there"

April 04, 2013  |  By UpToEleven

 |  Version: MediaMonkey Standard 4.0.7.1511

Pros

~ Spiffy skins.
~ Lookit, omg, is that a .. I think it is! A monkey! Well I'll be.
~ Sleep function was unique and cool, now every other player has it.
~ Create library stats function still rocks.
~ Been around forever.

Cons

~ Not intuitive at all.
~ Trying to get your library to play randomly is like pulling out your own teeth.
~ Why hide the crossfade options so deep in the bowels of the code?
~ No 'Auto-DJ' or 'Playing Doctor'. Not intuitive. Needlessly complicated.
~ No remote control. Hope you enjoy sitting at a desk for hours!
~ Support form, kinda condescending and needlessly butthurt when you mention other brands.
~ If you're dealing with *really* big libraries in excess of 1mil files, MM can't hang. Only JRMC has been able to keep up at that scale.

Summary

Not bad, for the n00bs out there.
If they had better 'Play Doctor' / 'Auto DJ' functions, as opposed to a glorified search function, it's be much better.

Eclipse3 is my favorite skin of all time....
