Despite a glut of free player/encoders, it's tough to find one that meets our expectations. Formerly known as Sound DB, MediaMonkey has excellent library-management tools that keep the largest digital music collections well organized. Stir that up with integrated CD and DVD burning, a stellar interface, a full-featured encoder, and the ability to sync with portable audio devices such as the iPod, and you have a pretty compelling product.

Upon first launch, the program scans your drive for supported digital media files to add to the library. Files are sorted based on their ID3 tags, and the helpful Auto-Rename and Auto-Tag From Filename features keep untagged tracks from falling through the cracks. Party mode locks down your library while still allowing people to request songs. Auto DJ plays selections from your library even when there are no requests in the queue, and the all-important iPod and portable device synchronization works well. Third-party plug-ins are available from the site if you want to tinker with the playback and encoding engine or add additional sound-processing effects. The interface is well designed, with clean, colorful icons throughout.

Considering the overall polish of this application, you'll be hard-pressed to find anything you don't like. Although it's definitely geared toward managing extensive collections, just about anyone will appreciate the comprehensive feature set. For $20, MediaMonkey Gold adds advanced features such as sleep, scripting, previewing, and on-the-fly file conversion when syncing with a portable device.

"I tried every media player out there...this is the one!"

    by morpheus2021 on February 2, 2009

Pros: Podcast support is far and away the best of any player out there. Synchronizes with any device, including iPods. Converts on-the-fly to format supported by your device. Manages huge music libraries, and cleans up your tags.

Cons: It's nearly impossible to order the Gold edition because they use a horrible third-party order processing company called "element5". I had to submit my order three times even though my credit card company said everything was fine.

Summary: I'm sure many people are in the same situation as I was last month. You have a huge music collection that is out of control. You have an amazing portable media device (iPod, Sony Walkman, Zune, etc.) but you are extremely disappointed with the med... read more >>

Cons: It earased my whole Ipod music library

Summary: For some strange reason when tranfered all my songs to Media Monekey it gave most of them the same Artwork. I whent one by one to delete the artwork. Once I started the program again it had the same artwok again but this time I couldn't delete it. W... read more >>

    "EXCELLENT!"

by BigCanada on January 23, 2009

Pros: This is a great media player that does not hog up all of your processor unlike iTunes. It scanned my 14,000 plus audio files in minutes without missing any unlike iTunes when I had to reload my library.

Cons: Needs video too. Also the library file does not list all the audio. You have to go to all the subfolders that are redundent but...some people like that.

Summary: Great for a free one and the interface is better with more options than iTunes in some respects and does not hog resources!!

    "MP3 Not Standard?"

by cydenllc on January 22, 2009

Pros: Good for organizing and updating audio podcasts.

Cons: MP3 should be standard and like others, to be truly useful with iPod, it needs video

Summary: I like the layout, and it doesn't duplicate songs in my list like iTunes and Rhapsody always will. It plays a good assortment of file types so I don't have to switch from player to player, but to be really useful, I need video podcast support.

"Pretty cool but has deal-breaker problems"

by jmcquigg on January 19, 2009

Pros: Awesome for cleaning and organizing a large media library. Integrates well with internet sites to get you good tag and other info. Other good thing for making your library perfect. Great if you have OCD or at the very least are anal. Good looking.

Cons: Locks up constantly on Vista 64 (new machine). Locks up the whole computer too (I didn't think that was even possible actually). Database errors all the time. Ties library to internal drive IDs, making moving and sharing difficult.

Summary: Unsure right now. If the thing would work properly I might consider toughing it out and getting it running off of a shared drive, but with all the lock-ups I'm not sure I want to continue with it. Its abilities and power are pretty sweet tho.
