CNET Editors' review
Its small size, low memory footprint, and numerous features make this the media player of choice, but you must add the proper codecs to perfect this freeware.
Media Player Classic's interface reflects its title--retro, old school, basic. This single player easily replaces the four or five video players installed on most systems. The only caveat is that you must download a complete set of codecs to play your favorite video formats. Media Player Classic also easily loads and plays DVDs. We liked how you can easily increase or decrease playback speed.
This program also plays most audio formats. We were surprised this tiny player includes sound filters and playlists. Hot keys are easily changed, but some users complain the process to set a key isn't apparent. The help file isn't included, but is easily downloaded.
The promised video subtitle search and download function is Media Player Classic's only disappointment. The default subtitle databases are both offline. (By the time you download this player there may be a new database available.) The address is easily changed under Options. It doesn't matter if you're a novice or system administrator. If you watch video or listen to audio, this freeware player is a must-have program.

"Pretty much what I thought it would be..."
Version: Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1
Pros
For some reason, MPC plays certain wmv & mpeg files that I am not able to open with Realplayer or Windows Media player. For this reason alone it's worth snagging
Cons
Having to click on separate buttons to pause and resume is extremely annoying.
Summary
A good alternitive to Windows media player, especially for those low on RAM

"This is a very simple clean version"
Version: Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1
Pros
Very small size and simply like the description states.
Its small size, low memory footprint, and numerous features make this the media player of choice, but you must add the proper codecs to perfect this freeware.
If you ad codecs of course the size will increase but it is not necessary for simple formatsCons
It is a very light version of media player so it lacks a few options.
Summary
All in all this is what I expected when I downloaded this software and is great for what I needed it for. I throw this on my usb stick because it is light and works well when going to the library or office computer that has limited access. I now can listen to music while studying at the library which is perfect. Thank you for this software.

"Not impressed"
Version: Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1
Pros
Not a memory hog
Plays a lot of formatsCons
Will play single DVD files, but will not integrate a folder full of DVD files
Summary
This player wasn't bad, it was merely average. When playing DVD files on a hard drive, the player only plays individual DVD files, unlike other players that open and integrate the entire folder so that the clickable menus work. The player also had a bad tendency to pause for 2-3 seconds, then skip ahead. It definitely was not a smooth experience. I don't think it's a file corruption problem, other players don't have this problem.
I would suggest VLC Media Player if you're looking for a freeware media player that plays DVDs, DVD files, ISO images, and a lot of formats. The interface is not near as clunky. -

"A Different MPC"
Version: Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1
Pros
None noted. I have used MPC-HC for some time and thought this was it, only to find this had a different version numbering system. the icons for the player looked the same for some of the choices but it did not extract properly and messed up when i tried to use it. I removed it but do not know if it managed to infiltrate my system.
Cons
not the same version numbering system as the one with codec, this had no codec pack with it and appeared to be a hijacked or hacked download,. it did not work properly ,did not act like the original media player classic i have used for some time prior.
Summary
while nothing identified it as malware or trojan containing software, it did not behave properly and appeared to be hacked, it generated an odd pop up 'read me' on an attempt to extract, it did not contain any codec pack as mpc always had. it was not similar to the original version and the numbering system of this was not the same. beware . the original version was just fine and i have been using it. this download was not the same , only the icon was similar
i attempted to submit a review and got a warning message from this site that it was down. i tried to repeat my review for this knock off version of media player classic without codec pack and wrong version numbering system and am told i have to update my review, but my review was kicked back yesterday. not sure what is going on with this site. the secure download got me a phony version of media player classic. it is an application i have and use , and what is here and what was downloaded to me and many others, is not the real deal. it is a hack or counterfeit
