+

Even the most advanced antispyware security can't guarantee your computer's safety, because most programs scan your site for digital nasties after they've already taken root. This ingenious Firefox extension warns you about covert spyware and browser-hijack attempts as you visit a site.

SiteAdvisor operates as an unobtrusive signal in your browser interface, turning green if the site is safe, yellow if it's suspect, and red if it senses threats or annoyances. The same coding system applies to Yahoo and Google search results, inserting a red, yellow, or green icon next to each link. Clicking these icons provides full diagnostics of the sites' threats, including links to other suspect sites, high spam counts, and the number of dangerous downloads.

We also liked the URL highlighter, which displays site rankings directly from your search engine, helping deflect drive-by installs that may initiate as soon as you type a URL. In our tests, SiteAdvisor turned out accurate and reliable results, and though it doesn't have a wide array of features, we urge any regular Firefox user to try this no-cost extension.

"It was good till McAfee got their hands on it"

February 21, 2007  |  By celtmaiden

 |  Version: McAfee SiteAdvisor for Firefox 26.1

Pros

Warns you about spam and phish sites.

Cons

A site was listed as red for spam, and they sent less than 1 email per month, yet a site listed as green sent 64 emails per week. I wonder who paid who for what there.

"Not very useful"

February 18, 2007  |  By MakeTechWork

 |  Version: McAfee SiteAdvisor for Firefox 26.1

Pros

it tells me which sites in my google search are bad.

Cons

Google safe search goes a step beyond and removes bad sites. Most of the bad sites change often that siteadvisor does not catch them

Pros

Siteadvisor gives ratings for sites and categorizes them as safe or not. Ratings appear in Google search. The plus version adds more including proactive blocking (like a blacklist of sites, phish detection, etc

"Good idea - implementation is awful"

February 14, 2007  |  By markq

 |  Version: McAfee SiteAdvisor for Firefox 26.1

Cons

SiteAdvisor is a good idea. But, there exist serious flaws in the scanning engine. It makes false, libelous accusations against some sites due to errors in their algorithms. Unfortunately, people blindly believe these results. If there were some way to correct this it would be bearable. But McAfee support just sends you in circles for days everyone telling you to call someone else. If you want to call tech support; you have to pay by the minute even though it’s their error. (What’s the definition of extortion?) They don’t just mark good sites RED; but also mark the sites red in search engines and even ads. That is, they modify Google, Yahoo and MSN results with their flawed technology. You can respond with a comment. But no one will ever see it because they won’t click on a RED site to start with. So what we have is a scarlet letter X pasted on the foreheads of innocent people with little recourse from a self-appointed guardian of Internet virtue.

I have been involved with the I’Net and before that the ArpaNet for decades and would love to see an accurate method of warning against the scum that engage in adware, spyware, spamming, phishing, etc. But SiteAdvisor should concentrate more on getting it right and not destroying honest sites before making mass efforts at selling their product. Otherwise, by destroying honest, valuable sites, SiteAdvisor itself may become one of the worst offenders in I’Net history.

"Protects you from anything the web throws at you"

January 30, 2007  |  By ghost__boy

 |  Version: McAfee SiteAdvisor for Firefox 26.1

Pros

This tool is a must-have for anyone who browses the internet (you're doing it right now!). The extension for firefox, though not quite as good as it was in IE, is extremely useful for protecting you from the big and little security threats on the web. The search-result-ratings help you stay away from bad sites, and it will prevent you from going to sites with browser exploits entirely. It can be turned off at anytime, though, if you need. Plus, many pages are already rated, and only a small fraction are unknown. Each site also has a specific detail page about why it was given its rating.

Cons

Internet Explorer's version has a neat littlel baloon popup for site information, you need to visit the site page to do that on Firefox. But, its the same product, so its good anyway.
