"It gave instructions to download and that was it, no running of the software."

May 14, 2006  |  By mueting

 |  Version: Maintenance Checkup Home Edition 2005 1.3.5

Cons

I downloaded the software and all I ended up with was membership to cnet. Looks like a scam.

"Do NOT download this product"

February 18, 2006  |  By Watcher100

 |  Version: Maintenance Checkup Home Edition 2005 1.3.5

Pros

None that I could see.

Cons

It tried to load .NET Framework on my computer even though it was already loaded. Stopped working after that. Thank goodness.

"This program really sucks."

June 14, 2005  |  By Scoob'

 |  Version: Maintenance Checkup Home Edition 2005 1.3.5

Pros

It promises so much and the interface is fairly decent.

Cons

Was this guy on crack when he designed it? My quicktime stopped working when I chose the default settings. It seems to deep scan everything, but doesn't actually fix most of the problems it finds or they keep coming back. Use something else. I know it's a 1.0 but this thing should still be in alpha. Anyone who gives this crap a decent rating is probably sleeping with the coder.

"Thoroughly hosed my system, hours to fix it."

June 13, 2005  |  By gsumners

 |  Version: Maintenance Checkup Home Edition 2005 1.3.5

Pros

Looks pretty.

Cons

I lost files due to the prog deleting files without advising that the folder in question would be emptied (NON-system folder with the name "Temp", used for catch-all before sorting and storing), borked my Quicktime hooks and messed up Java as well. Many ActiveX hooks just plain disappeared.

This program doesn't do one critical thing: there's no "summary of pending changes" screen to read/edit and approve before it acts.

Fixing the problem took running an "undelete" program to get the deleted files back on my NTFS-formatted drives, then I had to run a System Restore from earlier than the run of this product, and had to follow that with much software reloading to deal with the missing non-registry file entries and such. I was about at the point of salvaging my data and reformatting the boot drive when I finally fixed the last problem. Total labor time lost fixing the "maintenance" this program did? FOUR HOURS AND THIRTY-FIVE MINUTES.

USE THIS PROGRAM AT YOUR OWN RISK.

"Don't trust to remove spyware"

June 13, 2005  |  By Groucho Marxist

 |  Version: Maintenance Checkup Home Edition 2005 1.3.5

Pros

Pretty good for triming down HD bloat, but gives inaccurate readings of the amount of HD space it reclaims.

Cons

First of all you have to install SP3 for .NET before the thing will even run, then when you do get it up and running MCHE is slow. Very very slow. Grow a beard slow. It failed to identify spyware that Hijack this picked up. Identified Java components as spyware that weren't and deleted them, and on next startup identified spyware as present that it had already purported to have cleaned up last time it was run. The final straw was the fact it deleted entire directories of my wifes documents it shouldn't have even touched. Were it not for judciously making backups before running MCHE we would have been seriously annoyed. This product needs a major overhaul and some glowing testimonials from users before I'd trust it again.

"This program is horrible!"

June 12, 2005  |  By Joe65

 |  Version: Maintenance Checkup Home Edition 2005 1.3.5

Pros

Pretty pictures, that's it.

Cons

The spyware removal SUCKS! It keeps finding the same stuff and SAYING it's cleaning it, but doesn't. MS Anti-Spyware is much better. Why purchase this thing when so many BETTER anti-spyware programs are free?

Then there's the registry cleanup. It's SLOW, and the "Invalid ActiveX Controls" scan broke multiple programs (especially browser plugins) on my system!

The hard drive cleaning seemed okay, but it just went and deleted stuff without even asking me if I wanted to or not! There was no "pre-scan" to tell me how much space would be freed. And again, the process was slow! Haven't these guys heard of multi-threading? All of these scans seem to fire off in sequential order, rather than just all running at once using multiple system threads. Doing so would GREATLY inhance the performance. Also, it seems to be more interested in showing lots of frivilous numbers to impress you rather than actually DOING something. It seems to me the constant incrementing of numbers takes up more system time (and causes the program to run slower) than necessary.

What's even more funny is that this publisher is claiming that this is such a wonderful product, and better than most when it's plainly not. (Especially in the anti-spyware realm, when the anti-spyware capabilities of this program are probably the worst I've ever seen!) This whole thing looks like a whole lot of marketing, with just barely enough actual "system cleanup" to get by. I can't believe they're actually charging people for it!
