Publisher's Description
From Lagoon Software:
The purpose of MacAnalysis is to help you avoid all intrusions and damage caused by hackers. The principal behind MacAnalysis is simple, it hacks your server remotely (Unix, NT, Mac) like any experienced hacker would, and informs you what it did and how to efficiently fix the vulnerabilities in your server. MacAnalysis recognizes specific versions of specific daemons, for example, it knows the distinction between SendMail 8.8.2 and SendMail 8.8.3's vulnerabilities. MacAnalysis gives a detailed description of the issues it discovers on your server.
MacAnalysis reconizes thousands of daemons: - Mail (smtp, pop3): Sendmail, SLMail, VopMail, InFusion, Emurl Communigate, IMail, Eudora, MailMax, Internet Anywhere, Netscape Messaging, Microsoft Exchange, 602Pro LAN Suite, DMail, Mercure, Internet MailBridge, FTGate, Merak, Starnine Mail Server, Nu-Mail, NTMail, Post Office... - Web (www): Apache, IIS, Netscape Enteprise, RapidSite, WebStar, OmniHTTPd, NCSA Httpd, Microsoft Personal Web Server, iServer, JigSaw, GoAhead, Avenida, BadBlue, Alibaba, StrongHold, Sambar Server, MacOS X server, Roxen WebServer, Domino, Zeus Web Server... - Ftp : Wu_Ftpd, FtpMax, Serv-u, WFTPD, WS_FTP, ZBServer, Guild FTPd, Rumpus, Microsoft, Shambala, BisonWare& - more...
and multiple Operating Systems: - A/UX, HP-UX, IBM AIX, OpenVMS, OSF/1, QNX, ReliantUnix, Sco OpenServer, IRIX, Solaris, SunOS, Ultrix, UnixWare, MacOS, MacOS X, BSDi, FreeBSD, Linux, OpenBSD, Solaris, Windows, AS/400, BeOS, OS/2, OS/390, Lynx, Novelle NetWare...
The MacAnalysis database is updated regularly with the "Vulnerability Update" function. The program takes 10 seconds to rehash its database. With more than 100 new holes per month, MacAnalysis will never become obsolete or outdated.
MacAnalysis is also a powerful tool for investigators, with functions such as "Trace IP", MacAnalysis can find the location relative to an IP (up to city precision) with a graphical rendering. The Mac OS X version includes a "visual" Traceroute, it traces the path took by packets between 2 hosts by drawing lines on a world map.
MacAnalysis can also perform NSlookup (NS, SOA, CNAME, MX, IN A..), System Information, NetStat, Finger, Whois, ReverseIP, Port Scan, Services Scan, Name Scan, Traceroute, Looking Glass Features, OS Fingerprinting, POP3/SMTP/FTP Brute Force (Pre-configured Wordlists), Nph-Browser, Proxy Support, Network Info, ICMP logger, Full Featured Firewall, IP Monitoring, DUP Broadcast Scanner (Smurf amplifier detection), Telnet client, Buffers Overflow etc... MacAnalysis includes 2 powerfull search engines which are split into different categories such as Computer Breaches/ Unix Files, and Newsgroups. If you don't understand some technicals words, MacAnalysis gives you a definition with its integrated DICT Protocol in a few seconds. MacAnalysis has a schedule option, it can periodically check the reliability and the security of your website. If MacAnalysis detects a problem, it contacts you by SMS (Mobile Phone), email or by an audible alert. With the "security news" option, you can be informed about the latest security news from various websites without any efforts.
MacAnalysis offers you also everything you have been waiting from a classic firewall, and even more. It instantly enables you to prevent attacks with are intended to you by showing a security alert report. The Firewall Detector runs a TCP/IP stacks monitoring's sytem, allowing an optimal recognition of the attack intented to you. For example, MacAnalysis can detect if one person makes a traceroute towards you, sends fragmented packets in order to trick your system's security, performs DoS attacks, exploits trojan virus via a backdoor, etc..
As of today, MacAnalysis contains more than 1300 recorded holes (the oldest discovered in 1992).

"What a waste of good money..."
Version: MacAnalysis X 2.3.2
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I'd love to give a positive review, but I have not received my serial number. I used their ridiculas activation system, and didn't get my serial number. This so called activation system doesn't give you a second or third try for that matter -- it mearly tells you that you already received your serial number. They do not return emails (ever) and there's no way of contacting them by telephone. This company is by far the worst excuse for software security -- it's kind of ironic that a security developer is commiting fraud and getting away with it. -

...support!
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
MacAnalysis provides a wonderful front-end for many different security tools and utilities that are scattered around the net and/or pre-installed with Mac OS X. It also adds some unique security vulnerability assessments that are really great.
The problem: this is one of the buggiest Mac apps I've ever dealt with! It crashes at the end of nearly every security scan, unfortunately right before the scan report is able to save. This makes it practically useless.
I feel ripped off, having paid the $55 for the full version. Multiple emails to the support address have gone completely unanswered.
Save your cash for something else! A good book on security and a few open source security tools will serve you much better. -
"TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE....."

I must say the product seems solid enough but after my experience or "lack there of" with the developers I highly recommend that no one do business with these people. I spent a good deal of money on their products and yet cannot seem to get a response of any kind from the staff. Really too bad. -

While it has its limitations and lack of stability, I say without hesitation that this is one of the best purchase I have ever made. it includes everything I expect a security tool to have. I don't understand people who complain about the delay in the delivery of the serial, i've received mine in one minute.. it's an AUTOMATIC process ! -

And it's one of those rare apps that's fun to play around with. It provides a good education for the newbie user and should meet the demands of the more demanding, experienced user. This software is awesome ! -

Used MacAnalysis for a long time. It's a great tool!!
Installed the current version 2.3.2 on Panther/10.3 today. Tried to launch it, but an alert appeared: -10810 (an unknown error appeared).
Repaired disk permissions, but didn't solve this problem!!!
Does somebody else have this problem?! -
"Great Product, worth it..."

This is abandonware and has been so for many, many years. Why is this still on cnet?
Although I don't like product activation in general because you can lose precious time messing w/ activation whenever you are updating your system, etc... this dev has been great. When I upgraded to OS X, the dev expeditiously sent me new serials and I was up and running in no time. Don't get me wrong, I hate product activation in general, but this dev responds quick enough that I don't hate this product activation scheme as much as others (Quickbooks, for example... SUCKS).
Anyway, that said... MacAnalysis is a great security product (it can be used for great good... or evil). Only one thing I wish for, though... I wish some of the exploits were better explained so you can more easily determine the specifics on how to duplicate them... but, then again, that might be telling people too much, I suppose? Hahaha... (evil grin)

"Product Activation = bad"
Version: MacAnalysis X 2.3.2
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
MacAnalysis looks like an excellent product and I would have bought it but for one very important issue.
It uses Product Activation.
This means it is tied to ONE computer and cannot be moved to a different one. It is not even clear if you can reinstall on the SAME computer.
Like many companies we frequently choose to wipe and rebuild machines (e.g. to upgrade operating systems) and would then reinstall programs. Product Activation prevents this.
Like many companies we move computers between users, i.e. when a new computer is bought for a power user, their old one is wiped and passed down to a less demaning user. Product Activation prevents this.
Like many companies we occasionally have machines die, recently an iMac G4 had a faulty video chip and had to have a new logic board. The new logic board had a new serial number. Even with the same hard disk Product Activation would have prevented us using the software.
Like many people companies occasionally machines get stolen. This year we had three laptops stolen and replaced. With Product Activation we would not be able to install and use the software on the new machines.
In short product activation is the work of the devil.
While our company works hard to ensure all the software we use is legal, I as IT Manager _WILL NOT_ purchase any software or upgrade to versions of software which uses product activation for all the above problems.
So Quark Xpress 6 will not be bought (we use InDesign 2 instead), being 100% Mac based we fortunately don't have to use Windows XP or Office XP, I obviously will NOT be buying MacAnalysis (no matter how good the product maybe), and should Adobe foolishly go down the road of product activation as rumoured I will not buy any further upgrades from them (this year I upgrade Acrobat, Photoshop and InDesign).
For those people who might think that in all the above cases the manufacturer would be willing to reissue an activation code I would point out that recently HUNDREDS of European Quark Xpress 6 purchasers had to wait 6 weeks or more to get their software activated. Being at the mercy of software companies like this is not acceptable. I would also point out Internet access is not always available (especially outside the USA). -

Summary

A terrific suite of Internet Utilities and fairly intuitive to use, for if you need a manual to run the program effectively, you really have no real need this program... $55.00 is a bit pricey for any program like this, in this day and age, as I have WhatRoute in my dock for most everyday use, albeit not as complete as MacAnalysis, it is free and contains the most used internet diagnostic apps. I would pay perhaps $25 for MacAnalysis to enable all the features, as I LOVE the aesthetics of the program, if nothing else. -
"Still no documentation ?"

Everything you might need in a network security auditing tool is there - and a lot more. However, I regret there is as yet no documentation beyond a very sparse overview.
