Publisher's description
From MP3Gain :MP3Gain does not just do peak normalization, as many normalizers do. Instead, it does some statistical analysis to determine how loud the file actually sounds to the human ear. Also, the changes MP3Gain makes are completely lossless. There is no quality lost in the change because the program adjusts the mp3 file directly, without decoding and re-encoding.
MP3Gain operates in two modes, Track and Album. Track mode volume-corrects a mix of unrelated songs to a selected level. MP3Gain calculates the volume level for each song individually. It then corrects each song to make its volume level match the Target Volume. Album mode volume-corrects a collection of related songs (as they would appear on a CD, or "album") relative to other collections of songs.
Applying Album gain is like adjusting the volume knob once for each CD you put in your CD player. The overall volume of the album is adjusted to the Target Volume, but the volume differences between the mp3s in the album are preserved. With Album mode, you want some songs to be noticeably quieter than other songs, just like they are on an album. If you're playing a classical CD, you expect the track with the flute solo to be quieter than the track with the big full-orchestra finale. Album mode allows you to correct an entire album while keeping each song's volume level relative to the other songs.

Version: MP3Gain 1.2.3
"You'll be suprised on what you find"
Pros: If you've ever recorded from a streaming radio station, downloaded a shifty mp3 or converted from a wav or wma you are gonna need this! I have run all my songs through this and nine times out of ten the volume was either spiking or so low I couldn't hear it without the trash in the background. Two swings though this very easy program and they play at the same volume and as clear as ever. I love this, and use it everyday. Even songs from your own cds benefit from a little TLC from MP3Gain - and it's free!
Cons: Nothing that I can think of - I mean it wont work with wav's or wma, but it wouldn't be called MP3Gain if it could.

"This is great - used it to normalise 6 hours of MP3s for a wedding."
Pros: There are many products out there that do a poor job but this is great. I needed to batch about 300 MP3s for a wedding reception playlist so I needed something I could trust to work on bad 50s recordings right through to richly produced loud studio recordings such as Robbie Williams. The user interface is very intuitive for those that just want to get the job done without reading lots of instructions. The great thing is that you can tweak the 'global gain' of a track back and forth as much as you like and its completley lossless. You can even re-open the application and undo if you need to.
Cons: I was after a product that would normalise a collection of MP3s in comparison to each other, not modify the peaks and troughs 'within' each track. It does this well, but you can notice slight changes (raises quieter bits of song etc). This is only very minor though and I'd say 99% of people wouldn't even notice the difference. If you are working on a track where the subtlety of peaks and troughs was so important, then you would be fine tuning tracks separately with a higher end tool anyway.
