Publisher's description

From Skyhook Wireless :

Loki is a location-based Internet search, content navigation and location-sharing browser toolbar. Leveraging Skyhook's Wi-Fi Positioning System (WPS) to automatically define a user's exact physical location, this customizable toolbar not only turns a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop into a virtual GPS device, but it also integrates that location into the user's Internet search, browsing, and communications. For the first time, Internet users can easily integrate their view of the digital world with their physical location. With one click, instantly find the nearest jazz band, directions to the closest Thai restaurant, the cheapest gas prices in town... or even pinpoint your exact location on a map. You can even share that location with others.

Version 1.0.2.8 now works with most proxy configurations.

"Loki just made my life much easier."

by mandydipandi on May 1, 2006

Pros: Loki is so cool. I've used it a lot since i've downloaded it... for everything from finding a place to eat out of town, to the best gas prices near me, and for many different things i've needed for work. theres no more searching around for anything, loki finds it all for me..now when people ask me where they can find something, i just tell them to use loki, i cant recommend this enough.

Cons: well, its still pretty new and im excited to see what other channels it will get in the future.

    by Jose1Prado on April 29, 2006

Pros: What a great idea. It has become a life saver while I travel. Whenever I am in a hotel in a strange city I use it to plan my visit.

Cons: I'd like to see the coverage expanded outside the US

    "Pretty Cool Idea"

by daxsmooth on April 20, 2006

Pros: It uses Wi-Fi in your neighborhood to accurately position you geographically. The toolbar also lets you do things like local search and provides to other location relevant content.

    Cons: No MAC support

    "BAD--don't be fooled"

by gjbdebug on April 13, 2006

    Pros: nothing

Cons: I downloaded/installed this only because the description caught my eye as something that really can't be done--there is currently no way to pinpoint your "exact location" based on simply your current wi-fi connection. At best, it would simply give a general location based on a geo lookup of your gateway IP, which does not need to be a wireless connection.

So I installed it and, sure enough, that's exactly what it does. You don't need software to do that; your general location is easily ascertainable by geo locating your gateway IP address(es), and this is certainly not wi-fi specific.

What's more, it manages to install an IE toolbar, and thus should be suspect out of the gate.

Lastly, after I uninstalled the application, guess what? The IE toolbar remains in a manner that resembles (and may be) BHO (browser helper object) spyware.

    "How do they do that?!"

by chabert on May 3, 2006

Pros: It found me right my block!

I recently moved and I now use loki all the time to find things around me. Was a lifesaver to quickly locate the closest Starbucks :-)

Cons: Outside of the coverage area you have to tune loki to get a good location.
