Publisher's description of LocatePC
LocatePC is theft recovery software for Windows computers that runs invisibly and regularly sends a secret email that lists your computer's current IP address (plus other identifying information). If your computer is ever stolen and you get another email message from LocatePC, law enforcement authorities (with cooperation from the ISP), may be able to use the info in the email to identify who's using the computer and where it's located.
Version 1.4.8 adds explanatory text to settings dialogs.

- Version reviewed: LocatePC 1.4.8
Hopefully, you won't ever need it, but LocatePC sends automated messages to your e-mail account to help track your machine if it's stolen. This free program detects if your computer is using a new IP address and instantly sends an alert via e-mail if the address changes.
It has a nice layout, but because no help file is included, the interface has a lot of instructional information. This password-protected application is moderately simple to configure. The most laborious task is finding and entering your SMTP and port for your mail server, unless you're using Yahoo Mail Plus, AOL, Bluebottle, Gawab.com, or InMail24.com, for which the program automatically fills in the info for you.LocatePC sends you an e-mail message on a user-specified schedule or if your IP address is changed in order to inform you and the authorities, if need be, of the PC's current proxy number. Although its primary function is its thief-nabbing capability, with a few more features we think this software could double as a spy tool to see if someone is accessing the Web incognito. This simple freeware tool gives you a place to start if the unthinkable happens.More popular Monitoring Software downloads

Version: LocatePC 1.4.8
"Works great for the basic "phone home" concept."
Pros: Has been functioning without hiccups, providing a steady trickle of reports I automatically email; should the day come, I have a great chance of "hearing" from my computer again. Email schedule/rules are very reasonable. Trace-route results are more flexible and useful than a competing product (by iSpice).
Cons: Email notification is NOT secure, so could be read / stopped on a network. Custom message body currently has an unspecified character limit. Although the console hot-key access has 6 combination choices, it could be more flexible.
[ The program should be buried deeper into the system, like in the BIOS using the rootkit method. Enhancements to make use of GPS, , SMS, KVM and DOD level remote file destruction would set this product apart from the rest.]

"Does what it says (and no viruses found)"
Pros: The software is simple to set up and does exactly what it's supposed to. When running the program disappears completely and can only be recalled using a hot-key combination and a password.
No idea what the AlphoThe1 is talking about. Maybe a false positive from his antivirus s/w.
Cons: The user interface needs a little work - the email message config box doesn't always get saved, it took me 5 goes to get it right.
There's no uninstall in add/remove which is what you'd expect - there's a button to do this on the interface once you've got past the password. But I found that you can defeat the program by re-installing it. Of course the average thief isn't going to know the program is there so it's not a major problem.
The program only works when you are logged in. So you need to have the pc configured with no password or a default user login so that your thief can actually get into windows.
