Editors' Review

+
Even kitchen novices will feel like master chefs after using the encyclopedic Living Cookbook. A battery of recipes is here, of course, offering detailed ingredients, instructions, and even images. An integrated calendar is helpful for menu planning, too. But most notable is the comprehensive glossary offering up insight into arcane cooking terms and data. You even can edit entries if your kitchen tests reveal necessary tweaks or tips. Printing and sharing tools also are handy. Anyone looking to sharpen their culinary chops will find Living Cookbook an excellent resource.

"Too Constricting and has Calculation Errors"

October 19, 2010  |  By fishheadsoup88

 |  Version: Living Cookbook 2008 2.0.51

Pros

Looks nice and prints recipes with estimated nutritional value if you verify each entry

Cons

Constricts where you can enter software
Want's to be a big brother like Microsoft and tracks when you open program
Has gross errors in the calculation of entered and database items when creating a recipe

Summary

Although this software is mediocre at best it does it's job when it is calculating properly. I entered a recipe and it calculated each serving at over 5000 calories for something like 8 oz due to the miscalculation of an item. I am finding that I need to verify each and every item that I add to a recipe after it is finished and every time I have to adjust qty and nutrition value to get it to work properly and display values properly. Believe me I know math and I know software and this software is very buggy. I calculate each recipe on paper each time before entering and after entering every recipe it always comes out wrong and I have to adjust it and were talking by hundreds of calories.
I found after the fact that it restricts me on where I can install this software and it can not be mobile. Where I would have prefered to install it to an external HD this software does not allow you to. When brought up at the developer forum this was only verified and policy was put in my face by responders. Not a very friendly place.
Not a user friendly company or software that I would recommend to anybody and as I have paid for this I will make do with what I have and just work around the bugs.
There is a newer version soon to be released that looks prettier but I am sure has the very same bugs and restrictions. Won't consider in the least to upgrade and spend more money on a mediocre program.

"Too many bugs and issues."

February 01, 2010  |  By jakebe2

 |  Version: Living Cookbook 2008 2.0.51

Pros

As a whole the program would do everything you could want.

Cons

The program is not intuitive enough and takes too much time trying to figure out what should be simple steps. The tutorials need a major overhaul. Uninstalling and reinstalling did not fix display issues.

Summary

I wish the program would work right and was more intuitive to use. I think I would love it after using it for awhile if it worked. I'm a very experienced computer user (daily since early '80s) and had too many problems trying to get it to work correctly. A novice computer user would be lost. One window would not clear completely and would partially hide the one below. Same with drop down menu boxes. They would fail to close properly. I even tried adjusting my computer graphics settings and still had issues. I really was hoping this would be a good workable program and would do the things it advertised but there were just too many problems to continue struggling with it. Glad there was a trial period.

"So far, great software!"

December 31, 2009  |  By mrhoadestx

 |  Version: Living Cookbook 2008 2.0.51

Pros

I imported all my recipes (2226 of them) from AccuChef without much incident. There are a few mistakes that i'm catching, but that's not much, considering. Apparently when I upgraded to Win7, it caused serious problems with AccuChef. I'm liking it.

Cons

I find it not quite as intuitive as I'd like. I did write an email to support after searching the forum, but it's been 2 or 3 days so far without a response. During the interval I finally figured out the answer to my question.

Summary

Haven't tried some features, so time will tell if I continue to like it, but I think I will. :)

Pros

Great for recipe and nutrition info management - great import/export functions and ability to make cookbooks

Cons

VERY VERY difficult (impossible) to use for comparing grocery costs, shopping - linking system is way to complicated

Summary

Do not buy if you need to be able to manage food costs/shopping lists

"Great Little Package"

November 26, 2009  |  By nanrig

 |  Version: Living Cookbook 2008 2.0.51

Pros

Capture recipes from internet, keep an inventory so you know when to re-stock

Cons

Could do with the tutorials expanded a little.

Summary

I think this is the best cookery programme I could ever hope for. I have been looking for a programme for a long time now and here it is (I hope, just started using it but I have bought it)

Pros

????????????

Cons

Was looking for healthy recipes. Am I missing something? Searched for chicken breast and nothing came up. Tried vegetarian and had the same result. Seems good for the meat and potatoes type. Moving on...

"my search is finally over, I did the trial then ordered"

May 12, 2009  |  By debbiekerr

 |  Version: Living Cookbook 2008 2.0.51

Pros

more features than my old program; trial virtually full version; full version is HALF price of what an 'upgrade' to Cook 'n would have cost - and I believe this has more features - the trial download for Cook 'n didn't allow me to test, only 'browse'

Cons

one license per computer not great, but considering the price and features, a small price to pay - plus I'll want all my recipes in one place anyway.

Summary

more features than I was hoping for, at a reasonable price
