Keyloggers are sneaky little programs that can record everything you type, including usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, and other sensitive information. Although antivirus software is often able to detect and eliminate such programs once you're infected, they're not foolproof. KeyScrambler Personal promises to encrypt your keystrokes at the level of your keyboard driver and decrypt them when they reach your browser so they're visible to you. Sounds good in theory, but does it work? We can't guarantee that it's perfect, but we can say that it worked just fine when we tried it.

Obviously, if we wanted to see if KeyScrambler Personal could guard against keyloggers, we'd have to install a keylogger on our machine. We did, made sure it was logging our keystrokes, and then installed KeyScrambler Personal. The program appeared as an icon in our system tray; right-clicking on it brought up an options menu, which let us set a hot key for enabling and disabling the program and specify how we wanted the program to display when in use. We set about typing in Firefox, one of KeyScrambler Personal's supported browsers, and a small box appeared that displayed the scrambled version of the text we typed. When we opened our keylogger to see what it had captured, there was all our scrambled text in place of what we'd actually typed. It's important to remember that KeyScrambler Personal doesn't encrypt everything you do; we were still able to view the Web sites we'd visited and search engine results. But text that we'd actually typed, such as in e-mails and in-browser chats, was indeed encrypted. An online Help file gives a thorough overview of the program's use. Overall, KeyScrambler Personal was easy to use and it seemed to be effective. It's worth checking out if you want to keep what you type safe from prying eyes.

KeyScrambler Personal installs and uninstalls without issues.

"New Version is God Awful!"

March 22, 2013  |  By NWMEDIA

 |  Version: KeyScrambler Personal 3.0.2.1

Pros

Absolutely none. They took a great product and messed it up completely.

Cons

Product is now useless. Don't even bother to buy the PAID PREMIUM version.

It works if you are using it while in Administrator mode on your computer (as far as I know, if you have Windows Vista). If you have more than one assigned user on your computer, it encrypts but will NOT do decryption on the browser.

They have been made aware of it and obviously they still haven't been able to come up with a solution. I am sure users of the Paid version could be experiencing the same issue.

Summary

Do not use it as it now stands. Find something else.

"try and uninstall then try logging into bank sites etc"

March 16, 2013  |  By the_fork

 |  Version: KeyScrambler Personal 3.0.2.1

Pros

installs nice but un installation is a nightmare. with kaspersky you have to do complete re install after this product or else you cannot log into many sites as it is still scrambled and does not recognise what you type unless you copy/paste the password into the box

Cons

same as above do not instal this if you ever want to un instal it. it changes the keyboard permanently to encrypt so when you get rid of it it still encrypts but it does not re un encrypt so you can log in

Summary

dont try this unless you have plenty of time when you want to un install it

Updated on Mar 16, 2013

have now at last reverted my pc back to pre key scrambler days. have mailed the people who created this software to warn them of this issue. if they promise to sort it, then i may try it again. i un installed it because it was causing chrome to crash and the plug in was flagged with getsusp as a suspicious activity. i have investigated these issues and there are some privacy concerns with the encryption that i am still investigating. kaspersky has it's own mobile keypad that encrypts so i will stay with it for now

"A Tiny Program Offering Tiny Protection"

March 15, 2013  |  By scuzeme

 |  Version: KeyScrambler Personal 3.0.2.1

Pros

It's unobtrusive. It shows the cipher text when typing in this form field and password fields. I found only positive reviews on line. It has the option of starting with Windows.

Cons

The free version does not include windows log in protection. I've seen no evidence on the company website or in practice that email text is scrambled when I typed an email using Windows Live mail. Limited use for passwords if you follow good password policies. Many, if not all, key loggers can capture the clipboard (copy & paste). I saw no indication that it scrambled copy & paste text.

Summary

I can't see any use for this program except passwords. Most of us aren't typing secret emails. Those that are should be using better protection. If you use this program, make sure it works with your email program. And there is no point in protecting text that you are typing into a public forum like this one.

If you must type in passwords, this can offer some protection but you must either keep a list of your complex random-character passwords; use a limited number of simple (and therefor, ineffective) passwords or have an exceptional memory. And in all cases have flawless typing skills.

I think the risk of having a password list read or stolen is greater than the risk of having a key logger installed. I couldn't possibly remember even one good password and like most people, I have many. I'm also not a professional typist and one cannot even see errors in a password field. I researched key logger techniques. All sites agree that drag-and-drop cannot be captured so that's what I do. My passwords are hard-coded on a web page which I created and store on a USB drive. When I need a password, 1 click opens the stored page and I select and drag the password (and username) into the form. I think this is the safest and most accurate method of protecting passwords. I use an online password creator and change passwords associated with finances often.

If you expose yourself to sites that might install a key logger, add this tiny program to your arsenal. I don't need another minimally useful program in the start-up folder.

"Slight improvement of disastrous previous version."

February 19, 2013  |  By sidsen

 |  Version: KeyScrambler Personal 3.0.2.1

Pros

I don't know how good this new version of the Scrambler is. Perhaps I would need to have a hacker sitting on the other side to assure me one way or the other !!!! I will probably never know until and unless a disaster strikes me or never strikes me.

Cons

Recently, the previous update had a HUGE problem with the numeric keypad. I was completely flummoxed for a few days and I thought it must be a flaky update on my n-Vidia driver. I even rolled back that update but that did not help. Only after a few days later yet another Keyscrambler update was offered by Cnet where somewhere it was mentioned that the previous version's bug with the numeric keypad had been sorted out. I am now running this debugged version (v. 3.0.2.1 ) and have not noticed any problems yet.
Quite a few times (before on earlier versions) I have noticed that Firefox reported incompatibility with KS and disabled it.

Summary

KS Personal is free but I do not know about its efficacy. It is probably better than nothing if it does indeed provide an additional layer of security.

"Mostly unobtrusive, seems to work well."

February 18, 2013  |  By shirasuna

 |  Version: KeyScrambler Personal 3.0.2.1

Pros

Works in background, doesn't seem to cause any significant slowdowns.

Cons

Occasionally messes up on websites asking for name, address, and other info. Places scrambled data in boxes meant for information. Have to turn keyscrambler off in those cases.

Summary

Works, well enough.
