For a free Internet filter, K9 Web Blocker does its job well, providing a broad collection of options for customizing your remote Web supervision needs.
To run the program, you must register on the Web site to get the free activation code. The control panel is accessible only through the Internet. Uninstalling requires removing the app from the Task Manager, then using its password to delete it from the Windows Control Panel, and finally, rebooting. Because the password gets sent to the e-mail account of the person who registered the program, it's possible that an enterprising user could disable K9 on a shared computer.
Despite those drawbacks, K9 comes with a handful or so of predesigned filters and an option to customize. With more than 50 categories for organizing Web sites, and the keyword-free proprietary K9 rating system, the Web monitoring and blocking aspects of the software functioned well. K9 also has categories for blocking sites that have been detected as potential malware threats. Equally impressive, and a little bit scary, was the log that detailed not just blocked Web sites but also every Web site visited.
K9 Web Blocker is a good, free program for those who are concerned solely with Web surfing, but the lack of a chatware filter leaves some holes for predation.

Version: K9 Web Protection 4.0.288
"Best parental filter I've tried yet!"
Pros: Very easy to use! When we tested it out, it blocked everything. It didn't interfere with his online games he likes like the vista parental controls did. I like the customizable levels of blocking.
Cons: None so far, but it would be nice to be able to access the internet data from other computers...Not really a con, though
Summary: Over all, I'm extremely pleased with K9. I think it's a very effective tool for keeping curious kids and pre-teens (and some husbands, lol) from accessing questionable internet content. A+ in my book!

"Great Parental Filter at Any Price!"
Pros: Versatile, Accurate, Fast, Feature Rich, User-Friendly are the first descriptives that come to mind to describe K-9 Filtering. Blue Coat has truly done parents worldwide a huge favor by offering this fine program.
Cons: No monitoring of other programs such as file-sharing or instant messaging. No User profiles. NOTE: Only the administrator of this program should have an "administrative profile" on the computer. Otherwise this program could be breached.
Summary: As I recall, it's filtering is based on the N2H2 system, which is notoriously accurate as to white and black listings. It also does "on the fly" filtering with ease. I've used this program about 3 years and I'm highly pleased.
