For a free Internet filter, K9 Web Blocker does its job well, providing a broad collection of options for customizing your remote Web supervision needs.

To run the program, you must register on the Web site to get the free activation code. The control panel is accessible only through the Internet. Uninstalling requires removing the app from the Task Manager, then using its password to delete it from the Windows Control Panel, and finally, rebooting. Because the password gets sent to the e-mail account of the person who registered the program, it's possible that an enterprising user could disable K9 on a shared computer.

Despite those drawbacks, K9 comes with a handful or so of predesigned filters and an option to customize. With more than 50 categories for organizing Web sites, and the keyword-free proprietary K9 rating system, the Web monitoring and blocking aspects of the software functioned well. K9 also has categories for blocking sites that have been detected as potential malware threats. Equally impressive, and a little bit scary, was the log that detailed not just blocked Web sites but also every Web site visited.

K9 Web Blocker is a good, free program for those who are concerned solely with Web surfing, but the lack of a chatware filter leaves some holes for predation.

"Used to be really good but don't what went wrong.."

June 23, 2011  |  By Kevvo2010

 |  Version: K9 Web Protection (32-bit) 4.0.296

Pros

Works for short amount of time and then......

Cons

If it crashes or goes wrong, you can forget about your entire Internet connection because it will not allow you to get online until you completely uninstall it and reboot your system. This is what makes it junkware, I'm sure there's better out there.

Summary

Used to be really good, but don't know what happened. It seemed to work much better on my old XP system, but it would still crash and the support team can't tell you much besides reinstalling it. But if I'm in the middle of working on something important, and my Internet connection is terminated by this software I would be extremely heated about that. So, I figured I would just spare myself the unnecessary anger and frustration by avoiding this product for now on.

"Works perfectly and free, what more could I ask?"

June 16, 2011  |  By efg40

 |  Version: K9 Web Protection (32-bit) 4.0.296

Pros

Can choose anything from monitoring only to high security. Sometimes I have to investigate to figure out what to unblock to get a site to work, but I'd rather it err on the side of caution so I consider this a pro.

Cons

None. None.

Summary

Have used this now for years. Works better than anything I've tried, including some I paid for. Really appreciate this program with kids in the house.

"It's GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

May 22, 2011  |  By abitaman

 |  Version: K9 Web Protection (32-bit) 4.0.296

Pros

No problems, and things can be added or deleted with just a click or two

Cons

takes a minute or two to boot up when computer is first turned on. If enternet is used to quiclky at start up will say K-9 has a problem, and close window. Just wait about a minute and it will be finished booting up, and will be ready to go.

Summary

Been using for years, It is one of the best out there, and it is free.

"Mormon Spy Ware?"

May 11, 2011  |  By TheDownloadDon

 |  Version: K9 Web Protection (32-bit) 4.0.296

Pros

It would be good if it wasn't so suspicious and intrusive. As such I can only give it 1 star. This is not to say it doesn't work well but that it may be doing more than you want it to.

Cons

I have downloaded and tested literally hundreds of programs. Not all are what they seem to be on the surface. This program while being useful has a couple of key features that make me look elsewhere.

Summary

1. To download and use it you have to give the makers your password to the program. What sort of nonsense is that! I perceive this as a security risk. 2. It records every web page you have been to. If it is blocking undesirable web sites this is unnecessary unless the makers in Utah want to spy on you for whatever reason they have! I can understand some parents may want to know every move their child makes but there should be at least the option to disable this feature.
Parental controls and self imposed adult controls can be a good thing but not when you open yourself to possible computer espionage by the maker. I would also say to parents that there needs to be a balance when it comes to control of your children. If you don't build upon trust you will build resentment and your child will be likely to live up to your low expectations. By all means find and use a program for your child's safety, only I suggest a different one.

Updated on Jun 18, 2011

A friend has been using this with success without any noticeable effects on his computer. We are not sure if it is spying, however that probably is better than not using anything at all, so I have to give it 3 stars as it stands. I would give it 4 or 5 stars if they addressed my concerns. Personally I would rather pay for a safer program than install this one.

"EXCELLENT!!! especially if you've children"

April 12, 2011  |  By bishbasherbosh

 |  Version: K9 Web Protection (32-bit) 4.0.296

Pros

- very thorough in general, blocks all relevant content
- pop-up blocker is extremely useful and better than others around
- easy to use and simple interface
- very resilient to "hacking" or overriding by unauthorised users (see summary)

Cons

Hardly any. if i knit-pick then:
- certain websites r immune from the blocking e.g. novamov. these are very rare but still occur
- customer service in Utah(USA),so when I have a problem in UK, gta account for 7 hour time difference!

Summary

In general, EXCELLENT SOFTWARE. Is even more thorough than McAfee Site Advisor in identifying rogue websites that sometimes are classified as "good" on mcafee!!!

- IMPOSSIBLE TO HACK (unless you know password lol). I tested in extensively and was unable remove or bypass without the password. If the unauthorised user tries to uninstall or remove K9 from the registry, K9 automatically locks down the internet connection completely until the authorised administrator comes and sorts it out

- Can even block offensive images on search engines by making it impossible to take safe search off
