K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of VFW or ACM codecs, DirectShow filters and tools. Codecs and DirectShow filters are needed for encoding and decoding (playing) audio and video formats. The K-Lite Codec Pack is designed as a user-friendly solution for playing all your movie files. With the K-Lite Codec Pack you should be able to play all the popular audio and video formats and even several less common formats. It also has (better) support for playback of DVDs.
What's new in this version: Version 9.9.0 has added option to set LAV Splitter as source filter for HTTP streams.

"Conflicts with Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit)"

Pros
I've been a long time user of Klite Codec Pack, which, previous to this, has always been an outstanding product.
Cons
I've been a long time user of Klite, so I was surprised by this conflict. It affected Windows Update, and prevents Microsoft Security Essential from updating as well. A Malwarebytes scan confirmed that my system is clean.
It has to be Klite, because the problem occurred shortly after the installation, and there were no other downloads or installations of any other programs over the last eight days. Despite uninstalling Klite, the problem persists. I am now forced to do a complete system reinstall. Sigh. There goes my Saturday.Summary

free, easy to use, will not screw up your other codecs (in contrast to megapack) and plays every imaginable file format
Cons
playing of partial video files (split or truncated files) is not well supported. I mean it plays them but rewinding and skipping ahead is impossible. KMPlayer does this better.
