Editors' Review

JDownloader for Mac makes the process of downloading files from multiple Web sites simultaneously easier, but because it's Java-based, it doesn't blend in perfectly with Mac OS.

Pros

Free but with lots of features: JDownloader for Mac integrates with several download Web sites, including Rapidshare and Megaupload. Also, it provides automated file extraction and supports parallel stream downloads (if a Web site allows it).

CAPTCHA recognition: This is a very convenient feature that makes the download process easier. It works with almost every site, although it does not guarantee that all downloads will be successful.

Automatic file saving to assigned folders: You can configure the app to download files with specific file extensions. Moreover, you can assign separate folders for specific file types, such as MP4, MP3, WebM, and FLV.

Cons

Java-based issues: Typical of Java programs on Mac, you may encounter performance/compatibility issues while running this app. Also, it's easy to notice that this is a third-party application that hasn't been well-blended with Mac OS, at least when it comes to aesthetics -- it looks like a Windows application with the standard red-yellow-green buttons seemingly added as an afterthought.

Multitude of plug-ins/add-ons to be installed: After installing the application, you have to download numerous add-ons for specific Eeb hosts. It will be a quite lengthy process if you have a slow connection.

Bottom Line

The Java-based JDownloader does not feel as snappy as you would expect a Mac app to be. If you download files from several Web sites, spending time to learn this app could be worth it. But if you only download from YouTube, SoundCloud, and a few other Web sites only, you should look for another free downloader.

"Auto-installs junkware"

November 09, 2014  |  By lavalizard3

 |  Version: JDownloader 0.9582

Pros

Never used it.

Cons

Came with "add-ons" for firefox that you can't choose not to install. I hit "decline" on the add-on's user agreement.... AND IT INSTALLED IT ANYWAY. Changed my firefox homepage and put in some stupid side bar thing. I installed the whole mess because that's not cool.

Summary

I don't know if the program works, but I'm not using anything that installs junk even when I decline it.

"Works great for Java"

February 28, 2014  |  By DavidRavenMoon

 |  Version: JDownloader 0.9581

Pros

I've been using this for years. It's a fast downloader, and grabs links copied to the clip board, and then queues them up. Don't listen to the nonsense about it causing popups and tool bar stuff... that must be a Windoze user posting, and those reviews are all copy and pasted with a few words changed.

Cons

It's a Java program, so it's a bit slow to start up. It'a also a little un-Maclike, but you can set the interface to not be too ugly.

Unfortunately it appears the maker of the software has taken down the website. There as a German court ruling that the software was illegal back in June 2013. So add-ons don't update and some plugins are out of date.

Summary

Not a bad downloader, but can be a little confusing for a first time user. Looks like it might be out of development.

"I like it but....."

August 27, 2013  |  By jenkinsalabama

 |  Version: JDownloader 0.9581

Pros

Work rather well.

Cons

No one else in my home likes it.

Summary

The controls and user friendliness need lots of improvement. I am unsure why the maker of this program made it this way for the general user.

"Confusing for newbies"

April 20, 2013  |  By Malina_NY

 |  Version: JDownloader 0.9581

Pros

I looks like it can do a lot!

Cons

Super confusing for non-techies. It look my not a very computer savvy friend good 3-4 minutes to figure out how to download with my tips...

Summary

If you are a heavy downloader, it could work for you. If you just download form YouTube, which is what I use it for, FrostWire is waaay easier. Just paste the URL in search box and download. It even took me a minute to figure out how to add a link... The UI needs loots of work, but the backbone is there.

"Doing exactly what I wanted it to do"

September 26, 2012  |  By pdcomments

 |  Version: JDownloader 0.9581

Pros

I just downloaded and installed this with no problem. I've used it to download and save a few videos. It works great! I recommend reading cnethen's review from June 5, 2012, for some helpful tips. I tried to add a few tips of my own to the summary below.

Cons

I really don't have any complaints. It does what I wanted it to do. I have no idea if it's fast or slow because I have nothing to compare it to. Considering the price, I love it!

Summary

I read the review by cnethen on June 5, 2012, and followed the advice given. I stuck with the default settings on installation. I didn't need Flashgot because I don't usually use Firefox. So far I have found it easy to use, but I might have been a bit lost had I not read cnethen's review. I disabled the automatic URL-from-clipboard feature by clicking the clipboard icon in the toolbar (if it's not on the toolbar, look under Settings/User Interface/Toolbar Manager). Not every URL that I copy needs to be parsed by JDownloader. I prefer to copy and paste the links directly into the Add URLs window, which is accessed by clicking Add URLs in the LinkGrabber tab. When parsing is complete, control-clicking on a file listed under LinkGrabber lets you select it for downloading (choose "continue with selected link") rather than downloading everything listed.
