This straightforward and feature-rich download manager is a good choice for active surfers and those on dial-up connections. In our tests, Internet Download Accelerator raised the download speed by up to three times. The neat interface offers several ways to start retrieving a file: clicking a link in your browser, copying the URL to the Clipboard, or dragging the download to a semitransparent floating window. The interface also displays the download speed and lets you control downloads. You can arrange retrieved files into folders depending on their extensions and sources, grab HTML pages, and peek at the contents of ZIP archives to see whether you want to download the files. The program is accessible via a system-tray icon or a browser toolbar. When running in the background, the utility doesn't take much memory. The program supports Internet Explorer, Mozilla, and Opera browsers. Dial-up users should appreciate Internet Download Accelerator's ability to automatically establish and maintain connections or to schedule downloads overnight.

    "Owns Every Other DL Client!"

by Nighted on July 27, 2006

Pros: What's not to like? This is the best download manager around. Much better than FDM (which is nice and free but has poor PHP support).

Basically, everything I've wanted this to do, it CAN do! Every feature I could think of to suggest is included.

Cons: Horrible selection of skins. Maybe a freeware version with no nags or time limit that will have every feature but allow only one download at a time...just to get people using this. If more people know about it and love it, many great skins will be created!!!

    "This is the real deal."

by xTerminus on August 25, 2006

Pros: I've tried several download utilities. Most claim some form of acceleration, but when put to the test they often times prove to be nothing more than an enhanced "manager" of sorts, occasionally yielding slight increases in speed, or in some cases actually reducing download rates...

IDA (Internet Download Accelerator) is not only a full featured manager, this thing kicks it into turbo mode! For real.

Using the same 3GB test file, I am achieving rock steady speeds of 770KBs with peaks in the 1000KBs+ range. That's Bytes not bits (multiply that by 8 for bit rate = 8Mbs)... my cable is not even supposed to be supporting speeds quite that high.

Using other similar programs on the same test file I'm getting in the 150-250KBs (peak) range, which is about the same I get on this particular file with the Windows built in download manager.

Now under perfect circumstances pulling from a good server even Windows download manager can get in the 400-600KBs+ range with my particular ISP, Comcast, but this test file is on a somewhat slow server & therefor is a prime example of what IDA is capable of. In this case it is increasing the download rate by approximately 300-500%. That's no joke, we're talking 1 hour download vs 5 hours.

And the icing on the cake: It's got the most aesthetically pleasing interface, icons & systray of the bunch - in this tester's eyes. Though not necessarily the most important factor, there are a few others that are, how shall I say, slightly less than attractive.

Cons: Admittedly I havn't spent a whole lot of time examining every little detail of it, but so far I havn't found anything that I don't like about this program, & it does a stellar job of downloading in comparison to others I've tested.

by lnenad on June 29, 2006

Pros: This program has good resume options but that is all!!!

Cons: I've read the editor's review and when it said that it accelerates download 2/3 times i've downloaded it instantly and when i tried

downloading some programs it didn't speed up my download at all (maybe 2/5 bytes*)!!! I use Cable Modem 64 kB/s Download 8/9 kB/s

    "Beware"

by Stevebrads on April 30, 2006

Pros: May work for some, but not me.

Cons: If you try but not buy, this will become a major pest for you. It will hijack important downloads, continually redirecting your browser to the Westbyte web site. You will find there's no way to download what you wanted to download -- unless of course you give in and buy the IDA. Just some things I cannot download are as follows: Firewall update, Windows Explorer update, and Skype update. I know there's a hijacker program hidden in my registry; a specialist spent an hour trying to remove it, and failed. The problem persists even thought I now use broadband. As I expected after reading other user reviews, an email to Westbyte went ignored.
