A free, open-source, vectorized image-creator? You mean, like Adobe Illustrator, but smaller and at no cost? Could it be?

Indeed, Inkscape isn't the only one of its kind out there, although it seems like it at times, and it's definitely a solid assault on the Adobe juggernaut. Many of the now-essential tools found in the competition have made their way into Inkscape, including paths, text, markers, clones, alpha blending, transforms, gradients, patterns, and grouping. The app also supports Creative Commons metadata, node editing, layers, bitmap tracing, and direct XML editing. It does all this, and more, without hassles or an enormous footprint.

Other nice touches in the app include updating old industry standards--taking the CTRL Plus hot key for zooming in, and simplifying it so that all you need to hit is the Plus key, for instance. A small thing, but it shows the amount of effort being put into Inkscape. The latest version of the app addresses complaints about the lack of a shape library, for those of us who don't want to have to draw our own stars or triangles.

Overall, Inkscape isn't perfect, and it lacks a certain polish that those more familiar with big-name apps will probably expect. However, most of what it does, it does well. And since it's free, it's worth taking a chance on.

"Anyone who draws, annotates or does graphics needs this"

February 28, 2011  |  By PSSnyder

 |  Version: Inkscape 0.48

Pros

Inkscape is simply an excellent graphics program. If you need to create or annotate maps, drawings, prototypes, exhibits, etc., Inkscape will let you be creative for free.

Cons

There are a few rough spots and bugs, but Adobe has as many frustrations. Some pro illustrators may need more, 80% of typical users won't.

Summary

Linux may never take the place of Windows, but every year open source programs get better and become excellent replacements for commercial offerings. I need a graphics program a couple times a month and don't want to spend $600. Inkscape is a mature program, users who are willing to work around the few limitations and bugs will find a program that almost always does the job and is fun to use.

"Lots of capabilities and features"

February 28, 2011  |  By donkpowers

 |  Version: Inkscape 0.48

Pros

Easy to use. It has quite a large set of features considering the price. I like it. I especially like that everything can be set numerically rather than just graphically.

Cons

None that I have found.

"Small (in comparison to Illustrator) and user-friendly."

February 05, 2011  |  By Tracie365

 |  Version: Inkscape 0.48

Pros

Never used anything like this before but figured out on the first try how to make it do the things I needed done. Very nice. Still don't know what some stuff is, but probably won't need to and if I do, they include lots of resources to figure it out.

Cons

So far, so good. Don't really know enough about this kind of art/tool to say.

September 17, 2010  |  By Beth NoLastName

 |  Version: Inkscape 0.48

Pros

Inkscape enables me to manipulate graphic images like a pro. I am brand new to working with vector graphics, yet get results I can be proud of quickly. I especially like the tool bar's easy access.

Cons

I have nothing negative to say about this product.

"Nothing special; difficult learning curve"

September 08, 2010  |  By jkingo

 |  Version: Inkscape 0.48

Pros

Probably works, if you put enough effort into it

Cons

Having trouble learning to use it. Hoped it would be easy to draw with mouse. it isn't.

Summary

Hard to review this because after trying it, I realized it wasn't easy to learn and use. Wanted a program that allowed me to line-draw and edit. Maybe this does that, but I haven't put the time into it.

"A good program!"

September 02, 2010  |  By cimofj2

 |  Version: Inkscape 0.48

Pros

It works great for debuging XML problems with Images.

Cons

Could use better Text handling features & generate a lot of excess labels. I don't use the save XML features because it can screw the XML File. Also it changes all transforms to use a matrix, so it can't be changed again.

Summary

Not really good for editing XML, but Images are fine. Some of its tools aren't asy to use to get a desired result.

"Might look different from illustrator, but its better."

August 30, 2010  |  By Sandman-ivan

 |  Version: Inkscape 0.48

Pros

There are a lot of controls, more then Illustrator and things you can do more then Adobe Illustrator can, for free. you can save the picture in its page/art board, what ever you select, or everything you have drawn.

Cons

little bit harder to learn everything, layers are underplayed but you can still use them if you want. you its harder to make the right size art board/page the way you like it compared to Illustrator but you can resize it.

Summary

I am a comic artist that was big into Adobe products but i was tired of paying for the newsiest product so i found this and it was a good replacement for Adobe Illustrator.
