Publisher's Description
From Bryce Harrington:
Inkscape is an open source drawing tool with capabilities similar to Illustrator, Freehand, and CorelDraw that uses the W3C standard scalable vector graphics format (SVG). Some supported SVG features include basic shapes, paths, text, markers, clones, alpha blending, transforms, gradients, and grouping. In addition, Inkscape supports Creative Commons meta-data, node-editing, layers, complex path operations, text-on-path, and SVG XML editing. It also imports several formats like EPS, Postscript, JPEG, PNG, BMP, and TIFF and exports PNG as well as multiple vector-based formats
What's new in this version:
- Shift will turn off snapping in the node tool. Bug #588628
- Duplication of nodes in the node tool using Shift+D works again. Bug #555449
- Changing all selected segments into straight lines in the node tool using Shift+L works again. Bug #532905
- Changing the type of nodes to cusp will retract their handles only if all selected nodes are already cusp. This improves usability when working with selections that contain both cusp and smooth nodes.

"Basically unusable due to X11 interface."
Version: Inkscape 0.48.1
Pros
Lots of functionality, good support for SVG files.
Cons
Requires X11, causing performance to be about what you remember from your 486, and even then doesn't even display very well. And forget ever being able to find your files in its little, invented open file dialogue.
Summary
Clearly CorelDraw inspired, packing in lots of functionality, but just different enough to be confusing (to the authors: look up proactive inhibition) and the interface makes most of the functionality a serious chore to use. Expect to accumulate mental lists of changes you need to make to your documents, then put them off for weeks while you find excuses not to have to launch this piece of software.
