All too often, software demos fail to showcase the product's functions. Such is this case with this file and folder recovery tool. FAT Hard Disk Data Recovery boasts the rounded windows and buttons of turn-of-the-century software. It does offer a wizard-like approach to recover files through a series of steps, but the demo doesn't allow you to save files--only to find them. The program's Help file is short, and offers little more than the screen tooltips.
Operating FAT Hard Disk Data Recovery takes little user interaction. On program start all connected drives are listed. Though the program is listed as recovering FAT drives, it also searches NTFS drives. To start a search, users merely choose a drive and search method. Standard search checks the entire drive, while the advanced mode allows users to select sector search start and end points. Our testers found the program's search slower than with similar apps. Eventually, the user is rewarded with a list of found folders and files. File dates and times are listed, but there isn't a method to sort the list. Because of the demo limitations, you won't be able to test the program's ability to recover what it finds.
Finding a file name is a much different process than knitting the file together from a crashed drive. With the stringent demo limitation, only FAT Hard Disk Data Recovery registered users can discover if the program can actually recover files from their drive. There are numerous file recovery tools available that give better odds, and more flexibility in testing, than this program.
