This sketch-based 3D-modeling program offers a suite of powerful drawing tools that add an intuitiveness many design programs fail to achieve. On first impression, Google SketchUp may look like it sacrificed function for simplicity, but that's not the case. Despite the extremely user-friendly interface, SketchUp offers a suite of powerful 3D-drawing tools that let you experiment and play with new designs.
Using basic shapes in 3D space for your outline, you can then extrude those shapes to make buildings, houses, or really anything. There are actually a number of methods to build models and they're all covered by an excellent tutorial when you get started. You can pick from a number of true-to-life textures to simulate wood, concrete, grass, and several others. When your model is finished, you can save and print it, or you can even see it on a real map in Google Earth.
We really like how easy it is to create models using this program and recommend it to anyone from the hobbyist, for experimentation and fun, to the professional, who can use this app for preliminary concepts for larger projects.

"Time flies with this program! Awesome!!!"
Pros: I like this program in that I am able draw anything I can dream up from home projects to spaceships; and that the drawings can be set to scale.
Cons: I would like to see more toolbar options. For example...making a sphere...or 3D shrubs and trees for landscaping. These options may be there, I just might not have figured out where to find them yet.
Summary: I love this program first and foremost because its free! It is easy to download and more than I ever expected to find in a free product. The program allows me to draw anything I can dream up without having to break out the pencil and paper. With tth... read more >>

Version: Google SketchUp 7.0.8660
"frustratingly abstract and underpowered"
Pros: its free, pretty unique in its methods, simple and colourful
Cons: dimensioning is a pain
tools are not powerful or varied enough
snaps can be over aggressive to drawing points, but there are no snaps to allow a point at 90 degrees or parallel drawing
while colourful, renders look like they're produced in paintSummary: as a cad user i found google sketchup to be counter intuitive and frustrating, never mind the huge workload it adds if technical drawings are needed, especially in an iterative design process where parts of the drawing are likely to change, its extr... read more >>
