The Google Drive app lets you view and store files, spreadsheets, and videos, with 5GB of storage space for free, and more if you're willing to pay a subscription fee. The app only requires that you log in to your Google account to quickly access files and media stored on your Google Drive.

Upon launch, the app gives you a list of items to let you quickly get to files on My Drive, files shared with you, files you have "starred," recently opened files, and those you have made available offline. In my testing I opened and looked at a Google Docs spreadsheet, a text file, and a couple of images, all of which were viewable on my iPhone. While I could store an MP3 on my Google Drive, I couldn't play it, so if you were thinking this might be a way to stream music not already on your iPhone, you'll need to look elsewhere.

New to Google Drive for iOS is the ability to create and edit documents. In editing mode, you can change font styles and access other formatting tools. Also, you can now view presentations through a nifty slide viewer. Unfortunately though, Google Drive on iOS still cannot edit spreadsheets.

Another big addition is the ability to upload files right from your device, directly into your Google Drive account.

Those who want the ability to read text files and spreadsheets synced across different devices will find Google Drive useful. Plus, the "make available offline" feature will be a godsend to frequent fliers, as well as anyone traveling to a location with no Internet access.

There is still obvious work to be done on Google Drive for iOS, but I would still recommend it, especially for anyone looking for mobile Google Docs access.

"Yup. Pretty much horrendous"

January 20, 2013  |  By JasonWChenard

 |  Version: Google Drive 1.0.2

Pros

It's free, I guess.

Cons

Picture this: You sync up several gigs of data. Then you click disconnect account. Then you click reconnect account and log in, and the software informs you that the local folder isn't empty.

You can't proceed. You're done.

There's no way to convince the thing that all the files are still the same in both places. Either delete all the local files and sync down, or delete all the online files and sync up.

Seriously? Et tu, Google?

Summary

How could they release a sync software that can't recognize when all the files are already synced?!!! Unbelievably useless!

"This CAN'T be the Google I know!"

January 03, 2013  |  By TroyOi

 |  Version: Google Drive 1.0.2

Pros

In theory, it's a great service for the price: $5.99/month for 100GB storage, syncing across multiple systems.

Cons

Worst problem: Creation of duplicate files & folders (with identical names) on the web side, resulting in duplicate files and folders (with "1" appended) on the Windows side. Even worse: Google acknowledged this problem EIGHT months ago (http://download.cnet.com/Google-Drive/3000-18511_4-12663648.html?refresh=1357210451974#rateit) but has failed to address it.

Also, a failure to upload and sync some files altogether, for no apparent reason.

Summary

This product was never ready for prime time, and I personally resent having to pay for the privilege of being a guinea pig for the development team of an unfinished, buggy, and DANGEROUS product.

Hey Google guys, I've put my faith in you for over a dozen years because of all the other things you've done so well. Someone in your organization might wanna take a walk over to the Google Drive guys and let them know they're succeeding in undermining the confidence of us former die-hard Google fans.

"Do not install. *NOT* functional (as of Dec 2012)"

December 14, 2012  |  By nick_harr

 |  Version: Google Drive 1.0.2

Pros

I switched from Dropbox because Google had higher capacity (GB) plans. It was a waste of time because it just meant Google could screw up more of my data.

Cons

* Crashes when downloading more than 1GB of files from internet
* RAM Hog: idle 350-500MB (Dropbox ~50MB); maximum 1.8GB!
* Needs 8GB of RAM (therefore not-32bit systems)
* Everytime it connects to internet, it recreates the filetree wasting hours

Summary

Do not use it. Ever. It is the cheap and faulty toaster that will burn down your house. Don't even risk it.

* It repeatedly crashes if you try to download more than about 1GB of files from Google Drive to your computer. This makes it a complete failure as a back up alternative.
* It hogs a huge amount of RAM:
> idle RAM usage: 350-500MB (Dropbox uses ~50MB).
> when syncing, RAM usage can sit for hours at: 1.8GB!
* Because of it's RAM usage it effectively incompatable with 32 Bit operating systems (with their limit of 4GB of RAM), and it should not be used on systems with less than 8GB of RAM.
* Slow and massively wasteful of computer resources: Everytime Google Drive makes a new connection to the internet it recreates, from scratch, the file tree. For large datasets this will take tens of minutes, if not an hour -- EVERYTIME you turn on your computer and connect to the net. Only then will it start syncing. And if you have a large dataset, Google Drive will then probably crash (see above problem) if you have a large number of files on the net that you need to download to your computer.

For the record, my computer crashed and I'm trying to restore 200GB of files from Google Drive. It is almost impossible, and I am in constant contact with Google Support. Their honest and sincere recommendation was to download the files individually in 100MB or smaller groups: i.e. 2000 separate downloads!!!!!!!

Google Drive has had this problem for over 7 months now. I don't think it is a problem they can or will fix. This product should be withdrawn from the market.

If you don't believe me see this discussion threat on the Google Support website:

"What a steaming pile."

 |  Version: Google Drive 1.0.2

Pros

none that I have encountered

Cons

I installed it on 5 machine in my office and have had nothing but trouble since. It has caused the machines to slow for 16GD of storage. Caused constant crashes - every bloody (read: F..) day. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS SOFTWARE - download dropbox, you will save yourself a heap of problems.

Summary

DON'T USE IT you will want to kill someone, but the is no one on the other end!

"It has ruined my computer"

October 27, 2012  |  By jnet12345

 |  Version: Google Drive 1.0.2

Pros

Nothing that I can think of.

Cons

The default set up is to sync with your entire computer. My computer was too large to sync without purchasing more storage. When I tried to un-sync files, they were deleted from my computer. When I uninstalled Google Drive, I could not get all my file pathways to stop including google drive, which since I uninstalled it meant I could not access any files or save new ones anywhere. Once it is installed and synced, you can never uninstall or un sync anything.

As well, there is no support from Google for any issues that are not completely answered in their pre-typed help section.

Summary

Stay far away from this program.

"Perfect for Anyone in the Google Ecosystem"

August 14, 2012  |  By Goliemoi

 |  Version: Google Drive 1.0.2

Pros

- Integration with other Google Services
- Multiple File Type Support
- Easy Set Up and Interface
- 5gb free storage rather then 2gb with Dropbox

Cons

- Only 5gb as opposed to 7gb with Skydrive
- Does not integrate with Microsoft Office application, especially important with OneNote (although this is not the fault of Google)
- Strange Bug during Re-installation

Summary

I initially installed Google Drive as a replacement for Dropbox. It offers all the same features, and integrates well with Google Chrome, Android, and my many other Google services. It also offers 5gb of free storage as opposed to Dropbox which only offers 2gb. I eventually uninstalled the program after deciding to switch to Skydrive, which integrates well with OneNote, allowing me to access my notes on my mobile phone. After realizing Skydrives poor integration with Android, I decided to reinstall Drive, only to encounter a strange bug in which the Program could not find a file to store my data in. I have also kept skydrive on my computer, mostly because Drive cannot sync with Microsoft Office.

"weak ui, not reliable"

August 03, 2012  |  By jkirk1626

 |  Version: Google Drive 1.0.2

Pros

accessible

Cons

format hassles. Asking if you want to reformat in Google Docs's own format is a no go. No, Google, I shouldn't have to accommodate you to store and re-access my own stuff. I've caught myself storing 2 versions of each doc: original and Google's reformatted version. If you store the original only, you'll have to download it then re-upload it to edit. If you store it in Google's re-format, you'll lose formats you needed.

I'm sure I don't appreciate the work going into making it work. Google Note, Google Docs, Google Drive are evolving in an encouraging way. But this is not ready for beta.

Summary

Work in progress for early adopters who like to experiment and tinker, see what's coming. This is not ready for consumers. Free or not, this will let you down and you should be prepared to lose content and formatting. If you're
