Version: Google Desktop Search beta 100504
"not the Google you're used to"
Pros: get results within 2 seconds
Cons: "one-time indexing" ran for 4 days before I finally gave up on it. sent inquiry to Google, but no reply (to my new Gmail address!). finally tried Copernic; indexing done in about 4 hours, works great.

"behind competiton and several bugs"
Pros: It discovers document on save or open. You can search multiple searches (history, files, mails) at once.
Cons: It failed to index most of my documents automatically.
Copernic search is definetly better. It allows you quick search (type just several characters and results appear), quick preview, image thumbanails, grouping of results and better inteface. I think most of this is included in Yahoo desktop search, too.

Version: Google Desktop Search beta 100504
"Hacker's Dream product riddled with security problems"
Pros: It is good for reading my stored mail messages and word and wordperfect files in a variety of formats; however other programs such as Copernic do this as well or better.
Cons: Norton Internet Security 2005 warned me that this product is a medium-level risk but recommended permitting it. After I permitted it to access the Internet for the first time, within 20 minutes my firewall detected a hacker breakin to desktop search, and then to Netscape 7.2.
This product is a hackers dream because it is actually designed to search your hard drive! As further evidence of how bad this product's security is, its data files are unencrypted, allowing anybody who wants to take a look fast access to all your data, even SSL pages! Google should dump this version and hire the NSA to go over their product and redesign it, as (speaking professionally with over 20 years experience) they may not possess the technical capability to implement real security. Desktop Google is a hackers' dream: A program that has already searched your hard drive for her, and provided the results in an easy-to-read format.
Take my advice, delete it immediately: With friendly programs like this, who needs enemies?

Version: Google Desktop Search beta 100504
Summary: 1. This does work on Firefox. No thunderbird searching support yet, but that is one of the things that is on their official list of 'things to come'. I'd much rather go with Google than a company I've never heard of; far too many of them can be l... read more >>
