- "Giganews Binary Newsreader"
- Version reviewed: Giganews Binary Newsreader 5.6
This news reader offers a quick, full-featured array of download and management tools for fans of binary Usenet groups, but its interface takes some getting used to.
Giganews Binary Newsreader installs quickly and launches with a wizard to help new users narrow down their initial newsgroup choices among popular categories, including pictures, art, erotica, MP3, midi, and movies. From there, the user must rely on trial-and-error exploration to master the application. Although the interface is well designed, the number of buttons and icons can be intimidating and confusing at first. The Help window proved to be very useful, and it opens by default and automatically changes to fit the context of the news readers current function. Giganews performed well in our tests, and quickly downloaded the larger files we threw its way.
The trial limitation (two connections) is a bit strict, and the price will turn off a lot of users, particularly when so many free readers are available. But Giganews will satisfy anyone who sticks with it and gets through the learning curve made necessary by its large array of icons and buttons.

Version: Giganews Binary Newsreader 5.6
"Giganews didn't help me well as a 1st time user."
Cons: The Help links to the Giganews forum and even its homepage did not work, so I gave up just because of that. I chose Giganews because I thought it was provided by the same newsgroup service provider called Giganews which provides news.mozilla.support, but I think these are not the same companies.

Version: Giganews Binary Newsreader 5.6
Pros: I hesitate to ever install a "trial version" of any software. I've been bitten too many times before by very incomplete uninstallation (ie, registry entries).
Cons: I'm looking for a "clean" newsreader - one that doesn't clutter up my screen with a bunch of windows. For example, why do I need to see the list of subscribed newsgroups and the message tree when I'm reading a message?
Summary: I won't even install this software until I can see some screenshots. I went to the URL provided in the Software Publisher's Profile page here at CNews to see if maybe the author posted some there... but got what amounted to a 404 error (URL not foun... read more >>

Version: Giganews Binary Newsreader 5.6
"Trial limitations annoying but features make up for it"
Pros: Fast program, many features. Able to search and save newsgroups, prioritize the queue, supports yenc
Cons: It took a some getting used to with the interface, but it does make sense. The trial limitations of 2 threads and the popup are annoying too, should be limited to 4, half what the full program can do. $40 is also a little steep for the full program
Summary: His a few downsides if you just use the trial, but I feel the benefits make it worthwhile. Whenever i need to download media off of a newsgroup, use GBN.
