Publisher's description of GetDataBack Data Recovery for NTFS

From Runtime Software:

GetDataBack is highly advanced data-recovery software that will help you to get your data back when your drive's partition table, boot record, Master File Table, or root directory is corrupted or lost, when a virus hits the drive, when files have been deleted, when the drive has been formatted, or when the drive has been struck by a power failure. GetDataBack can even recover your data when the drive is no longer recognized by the operating system or not only the root directory but all directory information is lost. Advanced algorithms will make sure all directories and subdirectories are put together as they were, and that long filenames are reconstructed correctly. GetDataBack is safe because it's read-only, which means the program will never attempt to write to the drive you're about to recover.

Version: GetDataBack Data Recovery for NTFS

    "Fair Thing"

by Ced on March 8, 2005

Pros: GetDataBack is one of the best tool around yet to recover lost data, but let's be fair: If you really want the most data recovery possible, you should try 2 or 3 different applications as they are slight differences sometimes on the files they get, which is hard to notice when you got huge amount of files to recover. GetDataBack has three good abilities: it says the number of files and sizes per document, which is perfect for comparisons with documents retrived from other recovery applications. It also tells you which files are deleted, hidden, or system-bound, to separate them from the standard files, and in the option menu you can select that no deleted files be retrieved. Finally, it is very long to scan, but when it's done, the copy transfer is very fast (if you decide to buy it). So fast that I always need to verify if everything is transferred well.

Cons: Well, the scan at the beginning is awfully long, and it seems I got to restart from zero if I closed it by accident. PC File Inspector opens on prompt, compared, but as I said there may be a few files that GetDataBack is getting that File Inspector won't and vice-versa. It happens with me. The other flaw is that GetDataBack separates FAT and NTFS in two applications. That may be a good thing? I like when an application just gets everything at once. Haven't tried R-Studio and Easy Recovery, but my guess is that using GetDataBack and File Inspector with a bit of file perusing to retrieve missing parts is the optimum option. I'm told that with some dead drives you won't get 100 per 100 per cent anyway, but nearly.

"Superb. Recovered every single file and folder intact!"

by nickwebb on November 19, 2005

Pros: It just works. Perfect. Saved me a lot of hassle recovering a complete drive that had been wiped by a rogue partition management program.

Version: GetDataBack Data Recovery for NTFS

    "Amazing"

by pokeyzoe on August 5, 2005

Pros: I didn't know that there was software out there like this. My laptop crashed pretty hard and I hadn't backed up anything. I tried to connect to the bad drive from a separate computer as an external hard drive but I got an "in page operation" error when I tried to look at any files on there. I thought I was screwed by I then I used GetDataBack and I recovered EVERYTHING!

Version: GetDataBack Data Recovery for NTFS

"It worked, recovered all files after a format"

by wheezeew on May 9, 2005

Pros: After trying and failing with "Stellar Phoenix" software, GetDataBack worked perfectly, retrieving hundreds of baby pictures that would have otherwise been lost forever. I had one hard drive with a quick format and another with a low-level format, and GetDataBack worked for both of them. I had hoped to get back most of my pictures, but I was able to get back all my files - pictures, mp3s, documents, everything. It took about 20 hours for the program to scan my 200gb hard drive, so it does take a long time, so I just let it run while I was at work and overnight. After that it was pretty easy to identify the folders that I wanted and recover the files. Again, the recovery itself took some time, but I just let the computer run while I did other things. One tip, save your progress at each point, and you can come back at the point you left. This is especially important if you get a system crash during the long process. I'm a university professor with moderately good computer skills, and I had no problem figuring out the software or recovering my files.

Cons: Very minor annoyances for something that works this well, but the software feels a little clunky, like it allows you to sort the files you want to find and displays them in a window, but it doesn't allow you to "select all". I had to drag my cursor for 2 minutes to select all my photo files.
