Anybody who has ever lost work on a corrupted hard drive understands the importance of backing up data. Genie Backup Manager is a powerful utility that can help save both personal data and program settings, with enough features to satisfy professionals, but easy enough to use for novices. The software allows files to be stored on CD or DVD, or to be uploaded to a remote location via FTP. Archives can be compressed and password-protected, and back-up jobs can be scheduled for recurring, automatic performance. Plug-ins allow even inexperienced users to back up the Registry, Windows settings, and profiles of many popular utilities such as Firefox, Trillian, and Total Commander. Advanced users can create their own backup scripts. The interface can be a bit overwhelming, but a wizard helps guide users through the process. We would happily recommend the software both to data-storage newcomers and old hands.Publisher's description

Version: Genie Backup Manager Home 8.0.318.488
Pros: The software is very easy to use, the guide system is just fine and its got all the features u need to make backups.
Cons: Problems when you want to restore a previously created backup.
I had a incremental uncompressed backup job running each morning at 5am.
Recently one of 4 SATA disks in the same striped array crashed, it held my OS and programs, so i lost a lot of emails.
When i tried to restore my emails from the backup i got the famous error that it couldnt read the treeobj.xdat thing.
So i firgure the archive was simply broken and were just grateful that all that had gone was "just" rather important emails and not unreplaceable stuff like family photos etc.
Here a few days later i thought id give it another try, because i figured that since GBM offers zip compression for the backup archive, the archive might just be a normal zip archive.
Using winrar from rarlabs i opened up the .gbp file and it worked, however i got a couple of error msgs saying that the archive was damaged or broken.
I ignored those and tried to extract a couple of random files, everytime winrar gave me an error thet stated the archive was either of unknown type or might be damaged.
The method that worked for me was:
1. Open the gbp-file with winrar
2. Go to "Functions" and choose "Repair Archive"
3. When asked, choose to treat as "Zip"
4. When the rebuilt is done, you shd be able to open and extract any file u like.

"Reliable fast simple Backup & System/Disaster Recovery"
Pros: Reliable; Tested successfully on 2 laptops; XP Pro 32-bit, and Vista Premium 64-bit. Fast; Disaster Recovery on USB HD in 3:42 hrs (250 GB/90 GB used), DVDs in 4:18 hrs. Simple; Backs up documents, music, and pictures, and also critical system files
Cons: Could not backup on Dual Layer DVD
Summary: Many programs do backup, others do System Recovery. But the ones that do both with comforting reliability, speed, and simplicity are very few. Out of the 3 I tried; Genie Backup Manager Pro 8 stands out with shiny stars.

"Many features but not the most important one"
Pros: Many options, including the ability to create a mirror drive (repiicating your hard drive exactly including programs and OS for quick replacement in case of total disaster). You also can backup to remote location using FTP. Many other options.
Cons: You can't synchronize files between locations so iif you edit a file on one computer, the program will update the file on the other computer. Too expensive ($50) when it lacks this feature, and a separate license is required for each computer.
Summary: Hard to understand why they don't offer synchronization when in every other way the program is so advanced. For example, it's still not common to find a program that will create a mirror drive and Genie Home 8 will do that. Also, when I tried to g... read more >>
