This freeware application can split and rejoin files, but it doesn't stack up against the competition. Gainaco Systems Splitter's bland interface offers a simple three-step process to split files: locate files with the built-in browser, specify a split size, and hit the Split button. The problem isn't in Splitter's approach; it's in what's missing. File size can only be specified in kilobytes, and no pre-set sizes are offered for standard storage media such as the CD. Most programs can automatically label each of the output files, but with Splitter you'll need to enter a name for each one. Last but not least, if you share your split files with others, they won't be able to recombine files unless they have Splitter as well. There's no option to create a BAT file so files can be instantly restored by anyone. Most file splitters, including other no-cost applications, offer these features and options as standard fare. In testing, Splitter had problems with large files and noticeably slowed down our system. Even users with the simplest file-splitting needs won't be impressed by Splitter's features or functionality, especially with the easy availability of more effective programs.
