GOM Player is a free video and media player that offers high-quality playback, easy optimization, and a sleek interface. It's easier to use than some of the popular open-source players but nearly as flexible and less confusing (better-looking, too). With extras like screen capture, GOM Player offers quality playback without the fiddly settings of the better-known alternatives. Naturally it has all the essentials, such as full-screen view, playlists, and hot keys.

GOM Player's look is quite attractive, with orange highlights on active buttons and a control panel resembling an audio component's aluminum faceplate; you can reskin the interface, too, and select many other options from the main context menu. When you first run GOM Player, a setup wizard helps you configure the program's playback settings for your individual needs. There are three choices: Normal mode, which GOM player recommends for most users; High-Quality mode, which optimizes playback for high-quality displays but uses more system resources and is not recommended for less powerful PCs; and TV Output mode, which is great for home theater systems. We've seen plenty of ordinary video players and were more interested in what GOM Player can do, so we selected High-Quality mode. We also specified VMR9 output, which requires DirectX 9 or higher. We could also configure subtitles and enable multiple instances of GOM Player. GOM Player can play back audio in three stereo modes (2, 4, and 5.1 channels) as well as S/PDIF output. You can associate the program with a wide range of file types and extensions, too, though if you plan to try GOM Player without giving up your current media player, you may want to retain your file associations; you can always change them to GOM Player later, if you prefer.

GOM Player's playback quality didn't disappoint, nor did its controls and features. While we've long relied on open-source project players that have every bell, whistle, and option you can think of (or think up and add yourself), we'd have no problem with GOM Player in the projectionist's booth, and no problem recommending it to anyone needing an easy-to-use, high-quality video player.

"Absolutely the best video player for Windows 9x"

July 31, 2010  |  By otr_man

 |  Version: GOM Media Player 2.1.25.5015

Pros

It plays a wider range of video types than any other video player, including Flash videos. And will play Shockwave Flash (SWF) as well as Macromedia Flash (FLV).

Cons

There is only one (very slight) drawback to this player. Although you can manually seek to any point in the file, by dragging the slider along its bar, there is no option to type in a precise point to jump to.

Summary

I should point out, firstly, that the version which I've been extensively testing is in fact GOM Player v2.1.21.4846. I particularly like these features -

1. This video player is compatible with Windows 98/98SE/ME.

2. It can play all types of music files; including MP3 audio, MP4 audio, M4A iTunes audio, MP2 audio, and WAV audio. And it automatically detects the Winamp enhancer plugin, and provides an option to use that with audio files. And it has its own built-in Equalizer; and its own built-in Normalizer.

3. It can play MP4 videos, QuickTime videos, and RealPlayer videos (I presume you need to install the relevent codecs on your system: I already have them).

4. It can play all the latest Flash video formats, including H.263 and H.264 formats (I presume you need to install the Flash browser plug-in on your system: I already have it).

5. It is the most customizable player I've ever seen. It has several dozen customizable options, for video playback; and about the same number of options for audio playback.

6. It has some great Skins, and some great Logo images. I particularly like the stars.jpg image.

I can't fault this as a video player. It handles Flash files better than VLC, or Media Player Classic. And it's completely stable in Windows 98SE (whereas VLC is very prone to crash in Win98SE). And it has a magic feature: it resizes automatically to match the actual size of the video image.

It isn't quite as useful as Winamp for playing MP3 files; but for playing any other type of Audio files (such as MP4 Audio, or FLV Audio) it's at least as good as Winamp. (I generally favour the user-friendly Winamp 5.06 for audio; but GOM is just as useful and user-friendly, and it uses Playlists too.)

Note: I didn't risk damaging my system, by uninstalling my existing audio and video codecs to see if GOM could play those audio or video types with its built-in codecs. You might have to install RealPlayer 8 or QuickTime v6.5.2 in order to play those types of video in GOM.

Just to emphasise: I was reviewing GOM Player 2.1.21.4846 (my favourite version of GOM to date), and I was reviewing it for its compatibility with Windows 98 (I found it 100% compatible). Although I love Winamp 5.06, and Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1, which are easily my favourite media players, I've had to add GOM Player to that list: GOM Player 2.1.21.4846 is simply a delight to use.

June 22, 2010  |  By gjarvis

 |  Version: GOM Media Player 2.1.25.5015

Pros

Easy to use, plays all different types of video files, plays video from the place you stopped it last time you viewed the video.

Cons

Not much to say bad about it ,only that when you install it remember to click the box saying you don't want the ask toolbar or ask as your homepage.

"Not Much It Can't Handle"

June 21, 2010  |  By gfaagau

 |  Version: GOM Media Player 2.1.25.5015

Pros

In general, it plays files that others cannot. It also allows easier forwarding by holding down the left clicker on the mouse on the current position and moving it forward and backward. Great for finding the right spot in any movie.

Cons

The constant request for Codecs. I wish they had an instant codec updater that loads automatically with all the latest. I am not sure it has the best screen resolution (VLC looks crisper).

Summary

I have used GOM for some time now and it is my player of choice. I hardly ever use Windows Media Player any more. Some files will not play (so I have VLC and Media Player for those). Does not replace Real Player or Quicktime, but I do recommend this as your default player.

"Will install Ask toolbar even if you uncheck it!"

June 02, 2010  |  By brewster1

 |  Version: GOM Media Player 2.1.25.5015

Pros

Gom works pretty good, 90+% of the time.

Cons

I refuse to use any app that installs software without your approval or against your wishes.

Summary

Gom works pretty good, 90+% of the time. However, even if you uncheck the ASK toolbar download option, it will STILL download it which is a pain to uninstall. Even Revo had a bit of trouble uninstalling it. It is VLC for me!
