A good ripper makes all the difference when transferring your CD tracks to MP3s. FreeRIP not only extracts and converts your audio tracks but also finds and downloads CD and track information and presents it in editable form right on the interface. It's easy to start right up with FreeRIP, but it includes a multi-language manual as well as tutorials and FAQs, if you should need them. FreeRIP supports the most common audio formats, not only MP3 but also FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, WMA, and WAV. It can also convert files between any two supported formats. Of course, FreeRIP can also play your files.

FreeRIP's nice-looking interface includes three tools: the Ripper, Converter, and Tagger. We loaded an audio CD in our burner's tray. FreeRIP scanned and displayed the contents, automatically retrieving the CD's meta tags and displaying them in the right-hand sidebar. The program's colorful toolbar accesses all necessary functions, including an Options Window, which is a compact pop-up for setting program preferences. FreeRIP offers many more data fields for both tracks and albums than most users will need, but those who do will appreciate not only the detailed tags but also how easy it is to enter and edit data. FreeRIP can rip your CD tracks and save them in the low-loss FLAC format, which preserves more of the original quality. You can play them on your PC in the high-quality format, and then convert them into MP3s for your portable player later on.

We pressed the Rip CD button when we were ready, and FreeRIP processed our CD quickly, ripping and converting the batch of tracks one by one, and tracking the progress of each in a pop-up. If you have lots of CDs to rip and little time to do it, there's a paid upgrade, FreeRIP Pro, optimized for multicore CPUs. It offers faster ripping and other options, such as prioritization. But we had no problem with waiting a little longer, and the quality is the same, so we were perfectly happy with the freeware version of FreeRIP and the files it creates.

May 07, 2010  |  By seattlec2

 |  Version: FreeRip MP3 3.3

Pros

"With my limited use, so far it's great!"

May 06, 2010  |  By Crobinson1964

 |  Version: FreeRip MP3 3.3

Pros

The program does a fast and complete job which is exactly why I downloaded it.

Cons

It could use a short, simple demonstration of its use the first time it is run.

Summary

I like it's ability to do one thing well. I use it to rip music to my system and it does this quite well. The usual programs available today fall all over each other to give you multiple uses, and usually you never seem to use anything but the original program that caught your attention in the first place...

"Bug Free & Intuitively Obvious."

May 03, 2010  |  By Felafel

 |  Version: FreeRip MP3 3.3

Pros

Fast, bug-free, good data base for tagging.

Cons

Wish I could tag more than 4 at a time but I understand the rationale.

Summary

A pleasure to work with.

"Works as described"

April 26, 2010  |  By mong00se2020

 |  Version: FreeRip MP3 3.3

Pros

Lightweight, simple, and ridiculously simple to use. It automatically detects any cd files in the drive and queues them up for conversion to the default output folder in the default format... and then it does it.

Cons

I have yet to find any cons with such a simple, straightforward product.

Summary

If you want to get music files off your cds and onto your pc (who has cd players anymore?) then this is for you. It only takes a second or two to setup, and has zero learning curve.

"Limited to 5 songs at a time. Installs spyware toolbar."

April 25, 2010  |  By SoftwareTestPilot

 |  Version: FreeRip MP3 3.3

Pros

Too many serious issues and false advertisings.

Cons

Limited to 5 music conversions at a time for this "fake" free version. You spend more time messing around then converting. Tries to install a toolbar which monitors your personal information searches.

Summary

I was suspicious of the claims this ripper has trojans viruses and the limitations. But, it actually LIMITS your conversions to 5 files. You must buy the standard version to release all of its features. It attempts to install a toolbar, which most virus scanners will recognize as a spyware/trojan virus because they incorporate into your browser and Operating System. Information you type is recorded and fed back MGShareware so they can monitor your music preferences. Don't be fooled. Look elsewhere for a REAL and actual free program to convert/rip your music.

"Incompatible with Windows 7"

April 13, 2010  |  By raypenner

 |  Version: FreeRip MP3 3.3

Pros

Didn't have long enough to see.

Cons

Tried using on Windows 7 and froze whenever I dragged an audio file into the list screen (on the program) to convert.

Summary

I couldn't get it to drag properly when I used it, so I moved to another download. Switch Sound File Converter allowed me to drag a file into it, so I'm going to see how it works...

Updated on Apr 13, 2010

Actually, it does work. For some reason, I tried to drag in a file that was 0 bytes in size : ) Oops. So ya, try this out on Windows 7. No problems so far (now, at least).
