CNET Editors' review
File management isn't always an easy task, especially when you run the risk of accidentally overwriting or deleting important information. If you're trying to keep the contents of your USB drive matched up with a folder on your computer or otherwise need to synchronize files, try FreeFileSync. This easy-to-use program makes file synchronization a breeze, even for novices.
FreeFileSync's interface is attractive and intuitive. Large buttons with tool tips guide users through each step of the process. Simply browse to the two folders you want to compare, click the Compare button, and FreeFileSync will tell you exactly how the folder contents differ. Files can be compared either by content or by size and date. Users can then sync the folders automatically or just move selected files manually between the folders. Syncing can update changes in both folders, create a mirror backup of one folder, or move all updated or changed files to one folder. Users can also create their own synchronization rules. Filters help users control which files are overwritten, ensuring that nothing important is lost. Everything about FreeFileSync is easy to use, but the program still comes with a detailed Help file that contains a lot of information about its more-advanced features. Overall, we were quite impressed with FreeFileSync; it's versatile, commonsense, and a great choice for anyone with file syncing needs. Inexperienced users will be pleased with its intuitiveness, while more experienced users will benefit from its array of configurable options, including symbolic link handling, and FTP capabilities.

"Nice simple utility for compare and sync"
Version: FreeFileSync 5.0
Pros
1. Free
2. Simple to use
3. Basic for a quick compare and syncCons
1. Needs slight amendment to make more intuitive:
a. perhaps make it so a button appears against each file to action if copy to left or right.Summary
It's free! But seriously, needed something quick and simple to ensure my PC/Laptop where in sync before I went on vacation. This assured me my data was on an external drive.

"Keep or try to get version 3."
Version: FreeFileSync 5.0
Pros
Supposedly this works correctly with languages written right-to-left.
Cons
I tried it on a Windows XP and on a Windows 7 computer. Unlike older versions, the file size columns were blank on both sides of the comparison.
Summary
FreeFileSync worked very well for me. The only thing I would have liked to add to it was to enable one to make it ignore 1 or 2 hour time differences because of daylight saving time issues.
When I upgraded to Version 4.6, it insisted on copying thousands of files which the previous version did not class as different. This was a nuisance. To make sure it does not happen again daylight saving time will be off on my computers from now on. Another innnovation on v. 4.6 is an unnecessary graph showing the progress of the synchronization.
I should have learned my lesson and not upgraded to v. 5 but I did. In this version the file size columns in the results of the comparison were blank on my Windows XP and also on my Windows 7 computer. Fortunately I still had the v. 4.6 installer, so I went back to to that. -
"Should have looked at this before I spent big bucks..."
Version: FreeFileSync 5.0
Pros
Performs all kinds of syncs, mirrors and backups. Can save session to make it easy to run again later. Once you figure out the interface it's really easy and fast to setup!
Cons
None that I can see.
Summary
I love this software. I've spent $100's on software like this in the past. I now make it a part of my "bag of tricks" for all of my clients.
