If you've forgotten a simple password for a Word or Excel file, this free utility is a good way to recover it. Compared to full-fledged password crackers, Free Word Excel Password Wizard offers a very limited set of attacks. However, the free demos of fuller-featured programs typically let you recover passwords of only one or two characters--in other words, they're useless for any practical purpose. The developers of this program acknowledge it's only useful for short, simple passwords (for instance, English words) of up to eight characters, but it does a decent job cracking those. Does a brute force hacking of the documents password.

Not a con but if the password is complicated and has lots of characters with a slow computer, it will take some time to crack it.
Summary
I had a file with a 5 character password. The program found it in just over 2 minutes. Not sure it will replace the NSA super computers but it sure works great on the local level.

The only free one out there that is free and recovers the whole password.
It is a FULLY FREE program with no restrictions besides the 8 char limit which is no big deal since brute forcing anything over 8 could take literally years. Used with successCons
Like to see a 64-bit specific version to utilize more multi-threading, besides that none.
Summary
Works on 32 and 64 bit, the only FREE one out there that lets you recover the whole password. Have used several times all with successful results, people need to realize though that this is brute forcing and dictionary attacks they take time to crack regardless of the program. The longer and more complex a password gets the more time it will take to crack. But, this program is my favorite among cracking word and excels- - - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

A user at my company forgot the password for a couple of password protected word documents. This fancy piece of software installed very fast, was very easy to use and found the password (three digit) in seconds! Fantastic piece of software!
