Free Window Registry Repair is a refreshingly simple tool for cleaning up your Windows Registry. It lacks the bells and whistles offered by some programs--such as special features for uninstalling programs or managing the Start menu--but thankfully so. This is a program that does something well and doesn't stray from that success.
The application's straightforward presentation and clear menu make this program appropriate for most users. The program opens to a window with very simple, step-by-step instructions. You can perform a full scan or select areas to examine. Scanning is quick, and the results list shows the data and key, sorted by problem type. The right-click menu lets you open the Registry to a specific item. Each time the program fixes a set of errors (you uncheck the ones you don't want fixed), it automatically creates a backup. This seems like a sensible and safe feature, making us wonder why most other repair makers make you manually create a restore point. Each backup is saved with a unique filename, allowing you to choose which one to reinstate via the Restore menu.
In addition to scanning, fixing, and restoring, Free Window Registry Repair offers an Options menu where you can choose keys to exclude from scanning as well as choose to create a system restore point prior to fixing errors. The program isn't perfect--the name of the program itself has a typo, and the Help file is actually not a help file--but overall, this is a great, speedy program for all but the most novice user.

Even though you unclick the box to NOT install the Sweetpacks toolbar, the download installs many other unwanted programs anyway. Browser hijacks, etc.

I was going to install this program until I clicked on the custom install option and realized it would have downloaded the very same malware I just spent all day trying to remove (sweetpacks). At this point, I don't trust it at all. If you do decide to download, make sure you use the custom install option and don't download that piece of crap virus know as sweet packs!

Contains no malware; user reports otherwise implies they didn't opt out of unwanted toolbars, etc. at installation. ALL free software must have ad sponsors in order to remain free. This program finds MANY useless registry keys & values that other Registry Cleaners, even the paid ones, miss.

Summary
This nice program has a very basic interface but is good at finding useless registry entries that other reg-cleaners do not find. It works on both x32 and x64 versions of Windows. I don't understand why users are reporting malware; which by definition is malicious software that can wreck one's PC. CNET does NO publish infected software, period.

"Worked OK but installed unwanted junkware."

Eliminated about 80% of obsolete junk from registry. Did not clean out history or obsolete shortcuts that Windows had created. Did not clean out the copious mess RealPlayer left when it was uninstalled.
Cons
Installed junkware because I did not select "advanced" install and deselect it. Spam-click 'next' at your peril.....
Summary
Did a reasonable job of removing about 2000 obsolete junk items from the registry, but it then took me about 10 minutes to identify and uninstall the various other items (including Wajam and Whitesmoke) that came with it, and reinstate my browser settings as I had them previously. I'd have given it 4/5 rather than 2/5 if it had not messed me around by installing this junk.

It fixed a lot of things that were not meant to be there etc, so I told it to fix everything. I was a bit scared as I thought my registry may not work properly after it fixed things. I hoped it was not cleaning anything I needed, as can only tell by seeing that something was temp, empty or looked like it was useless. But it does seem like it rids the unnecessary. Things seem to work OK still.

It DID install Claro. I did not catch that! So that had to get gone! I did not ask for that, plus I got a whole lot of stupid ads around my yahoo inbox, I wondered where the heck they were coming from. All girlie ads for goodness sakes. Lucky I knew where to look to get rid of all that. So I think that was a bit sneaky. Usually there is a box you can uncheck if you don't want another useless toolbar etc.
