Lightweight and effective, this program is a great way to convert video files from Flash formats into something useful beyond Web pages. Specializing in formats meant for portable devices, Free FLV Converter also supports AVI and can download embedded SWF or FLV vids directly from the Internet when you punch in the URL.
The app can also perform local searches for vids as well as convert to FLV. Hitting either conversion tab will automatically open a file browser so you can choose your victim. From there, a conversion window opens up, and you can change the basics such as settings, including output format, quality, and destination directory, as well as more advanced options like the codec, aspect ratio, and the frame rate. Tap convert at the bottom of the window when you're ready, and the Free FLV Converter works smoothly and without interfering with other programs.
Free FLV Converter does have one annoyance: When you install it, be sure to opt out of the Dealio toolbar. It's no more than a minor drawback, though, and doesn't cause problems later on. Seeing as how the app ran smoothly in the background, it's definitely a must-use piece of freeware.

Pros: I am not on-line at home and this software allows me to load flash videos and take them home with me so I can enjoy these at my leisure. I am so pleased!!!

"Did not work, totally useless!"
Pros: none, it didn't work
Cons: My flv file was supposedly converted but then I COULD NOT FIND IT ANYWHERE on my computer. There are no instructions telling WHERE the file will be saved after the supposed conversion.
Summary: I hate programs that promise something then waste my damn time! Why doesn't it come with some SIMPLE explanations as to how this stupid program works!

"Performed as advertised and then stopped working."
Pros: Lightweight, fast, decently well organized.
Cons: Bugs, lack of any documentation, perhaps not exactly freeware as advertised.
Summary: The program functioned well the first time I used it. At first it didn't recognize the web addresses I put in, but later seemed to work. The 2nd time I booted the program up, it successfully downloaded the flv file, but failed to start converting ... read more >>

Pros: The program does not actually melt your computer.
Cons: 1. It would not under any circumstances convert files. 2. All labels and explanations were not in English, and every time I clicked on "English" in the change language dialog, I would get redirected to a pornography site, and the program would crash.
Summary: It would appear that this program has been tampered with since it was reviewed, or the review was false.

"THIS PRODUCT IS FREE UNTIL....."
Pros: This product is actually very good. Clean interface, easy to use, nice selection of conversions, etc., etc.. but.....
Cons: There's a catch and it just happened to me today. If you click OK in response to "there is an upgrade available do you want to upgrade now?" That's it, this product is no longer free.
Summary: Now they charge $19.00 for the license, not really a big dollar ticket, but it's the way they do it to you. Kind of sneaky I'd say. I understand they need to make a buck. And they should. I just think there should be some type of forewarning tha... read more >>
