Lightweight and effective, this program is a great way to convert video files from Flash formats into something useful beyond Web pages. Specializing in formats meant for portable devices, Free FLV Converter also supports AVI and can download embedded SWF or FLV vids directly from the Internet when you punch in the URL.
The app can also perform local searches for vids as well as convert to FLV. Hitting either conversion tab will automatically open a file browser so you can choose your victim. From there, a conversion window opens up, and you can change the basics such as settings, including output format, quality, and destination directory, as well as more advanced options like the codec, aspect ratio, and the frame rate. Tap convert at the bottom of the window when you're ready, and the Free FLV Converter works smoothly and without interfering with other programs.
Free FLV Converter does have one annoyance: When you install it, be sure to opt out of the Dealio toolbar. It's no more than a minor drawback, though, and doesn't cause problems later on. Seeing as how the app ran smoothly in the background, it's definitely a must-use piece of freeware.

Pros: Efficient program. Works good. But.....
Cons: Nod32 says: "C:\Program Files\Free FLV Converter\FreeFLVConverter.exe - probably a variant of Win32/TrojanDownloader.Banload trojan - cleaned by deleting - quarantined" I doubt this is a false positive.
Summary: Check your task manager for "lsass.exe" , this is the trojan.

"VIRUS!!! shame on download.com"
Pros: Good conveter! but you have to accept the installation of a browsing toolbar, otherwise converter wont' install. After you remove, both software and toolbar, there will be a searchsettings.exe program still left behind. this is bad!
Cons: Its a ****** Trojan/Virus!!! don't download. Voicot this software.

"Contains Virus - NOT A SAFE PROGRAM!!"
Pros: I have pros to list.
Cons: after launching, program created a file that my media player will play but my editing software will not. I suddenly had many many instances of wmplayer running. also, this program continues to run after being shut down and is quite a resource hog.
Summary: CNET should be embarassed by this. I wish I would have read the other reviews before downloading this. I have now lost much valuable time and may very well have to do a system recovery on my PC. If so, chosing to install this program has created ... read more >>

"Boo! CNET should know better"
Pros: Nothing I like about it. Never made it passed the part where it forces you to agree to add spyware or not use it.
Cons: Contains trojans and you cant install without adding 3rd party spyware.
Summary: Nothing is free if you have to be forced to install software you neither want or asked for.Shame on you Cnet for even hosting this crap!
