CNET Editors' review
Folx for Mac is a download tool that also has the capability to suspend and resume downloads. When you visit a Web site, to download anything simply click on the link and Folx for Mac takes over, managing the download in the background while you continue to browse. Folx for Mac installs easily.
Folx for Mac really is two tools in one. The downloader automates the process of downloading some item from a link on a Web site. The download manager lets you halt and resume as well as prioritize any downloads already started. Folx for Mac can handle torrents and files attached to RSS feeds as easily as other links. If you have a limited bandwidth connection, or simply don't want to start downloads immediately, you can also use Folx for Mac to schedule downloads at a more convenient time. The free Folx for Mac app is full-featured, but limits the download speeds and won't allow scheduling. To unlock to maximum speed you need to purchase the Pro version for $19.95.
Folx for Mac worked fine in our testing. While there are a number of download managers available, Folx for Mac has a few features that are nice, such as iTunes integration automatically when an audio feed is downloaded. We suspect most people who are heavily into downloading will want the Pro version, but the free app is a good introduction to the features and also allows for more casual use.

"I don't recommend this software"
Version: Folx 2.0.1029
Pros
Attractive user interface.
Cons
Downloads failed to work for me.
Support was limited to email-only, inflexible, and frustrating.
Company did not honor their published return guarantee.Summary
Each month, I need to download 45 files from a specific website. I purchased Folx for the Mac specifically to accomplish that one task. I immediately attempted the download and found that it failed for all 45 files. I tried over and over again, varying my Folx preferences, browser choices, and methods of initiating the downloads, but the software simply wouldn't work.
I contacted tech support at Eltima software within one or two days of purchasing the software. Their only means of tech support was via email. They indicated that they needed me to provide my login credentials, which I was exceptionally wary of doing since the web site is highly sensitive. I wouldn't provide this information for obvious security reasons (sending username and password via email is incredibly insecure). I communicated that I would be willing to provide this information via phone tech support, allowing the rep to test the issue with me on the phone. That way, I could change the login credentials immediately after our work together. Eltima refused phone support, holding fast to their requirement that all support be accomplished via email.
Next, I agreed to attempt the downloads, and to allow Folx to log the attempts. I emailed the resulting log file to Eltima. They reviewed the file, acknowledged that the downloads were not working, but offered no solution except for me to provide my credentials via email, so that they could test further.
I continued trying the downloads over the course of another week or so, but Folx was never successful.
Next, a low level tech support representative agreed that, while Eltima wouldn't provide a phone number for me to call, that I could Skype him next Monday. They are located in Europe. I am located in the United States. So about the only way for this to work (time-zone wise) was for me to arise at 6 am and to initiate a Skype call. I did that.
No one answered the call. A few minutes later, I received a text message via Skype from that same representative stating that he is not allowed to answer the Skype call...the very call that he had set up. I texted back and forth with him for a while, using his Skype address, trying to understand what was going on and came to the realization that despite their acknowledgment that Folx was not working to properly download my files, and despite setting up a Skype rendezvous with me, they simply would not conduct tech support any other way than via email. They understood my misgivings about me losing control of security, yet they were inflexible.
Finally, I agreed via Skype to provide my credentials. They, in turn, would conduct tests on the downloads. I would maintain a text-type contact via Skype such that when their testing was complete, the low level tech rep would text me that they were done. I could then change my login credentials to minimize exposure.
We did that. Tech support confirmed that their software was unable to download any of the files properly. They told me that they that the website in question seems to have some sort of protection mechanism in place, and that they had no idea when a fix would be made available.
At that time, I requested a refund. They knew, and I re-explained that I had purchased their software explicitly, and solely for the purpose of being able to download those files on a monthly basis. They refused.
If one reads the FAQ, posted on Eltima's website at:
http://wiki.eltima.com/knowledge-base/general/money-back.html?ajax=true ,
one finds that Eltima's written policy explicitly states they will refund clients in cases like this. Their policy states...
According to our Return Policy, "Eltima Software offers an honor-based 14 days money-back-guarantee for the purchase any Eltima products. Honor-based means we will be glad to return your investment when we are sure the product is malfunctioning on a client's PC and we receive assistance in finding out the reason on the side of our customers."
I purchased the software on January 23, 2013. I initially contacted Eltima for assistance on this matter...oh the very next day, or at most, two days later. Finally, Eltima and I conducted the tests described above, and I requested a refund on February 5, 2013. That is a period of 13 days between purchase and Eltima agreeing that their software doesn't download the files, and they don't know how to fix the problem. Simply stated, Eltima chose NOT to honor their own, written return policy.
Based on my experience Folx does not perform the task it is advertised to do (at least as it relates to the 45 files I needed to download), their tech support is inflexible, and they don't stand behind their product. I wasted a significant amount of time, effort and money, and have nothing but frustration to show for it. Perhaps their software will work for you. If so, then that's great. If not, I wouldn't count on Eltima acting in good faith to resolve your issue. -
